Night Shift Robotics Engineer Localization information

What are some common challenges faced by Night Shift Robotics Engineer Localization professionals, and how are they typically addressed?

Night Shift Robotics Engineer Localization professionals often encounter challenges such as troubleshooting localization errors in real-time with limited support staff available, maintaining high system uptime during off-peak hours, and ensuring seamless handovers with the day team. To address these, clear documentation practices, robust remote support protocols, and regular communication with cross-functional teams are essential. Additionally, night shift engineers often develop strong problem-solving skills and autonomy, which are highly valued for career advancement within robotics and automation fields.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Night Shift Robotics Engineer specializing in Localization, and why are they important?

A Night Shift Robotics Engineer in Localization requires strong proficiency in robotics systems, localization algorithms (such as SLAM), and a relevant engineering degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with tools like ROS (Robot Operating System), sensor fusion frameworks, and programming languages like Python or C++ is commonly expected. Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently during off-hours are crucial soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure reliable robot operation, effective troubleshooting, and smooth system performance during night shifts when immediate team support may be limited.

What does a Night Shift Robotics Engineer specializing in Localization do?

A Night Shift Robotics Engineer specializing in Localization is responsible for ensuring that robots can accurately determine their position and orientation within a given environment during overnight hours. This involves working with sensors, mapping algorithms, and navigation systems to help robots move and operate autonomously. Night shifts are often required in facilities that operate 24/7, such as warehouses, manufacturing plants, or research labs. The role also includes monitoring robotic systems, troubleshooting localization issues, and performing maintenance or updates as needed during off-peak hours.

What is the difference between Night Shift Robotics Engineer Localization vs Night Shift Robotics Engineer Perception?

AspectNight Shift Robotics Engineer LocalizationNight Shift Robotics Engineer Perception
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Robotics, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering; experience with localization algorithmsBachelor's in Robotics, Computer Vision, or related field; experience with perception systems
Work EnvironmentRobotics labs, manufacturing plants, or warehouse settings during night shiftsSimilar environments focusing on sensor data processing and object detection at night
Employer & Industry UsageAutonomous vehicle companies, logistics, and warehouse automationAutonomous vehicles, robotics research, and industrial automation

While both roles involve working with robotics during night shifts, Localization engineers focus on determining the robot's position within an environment, whereas Perception engineers work on interpreting sensor data to identify objects and surroundings. Both roles require similar technical backgrounds but differ in their core focus areas within robotics systems.

Controls & Robotics Engineer

Job Description

This Controls & Robotics Engineer role focuses on designing, programming, and commissioning advanced automation systems with a strong emphasis on robotics integration. You will work hands-on across the full project lifecycle, from initial concept and design through installation, commissioning, and customer handoff. In this position, you will build complete automation solutions that combine robotics, PLC controls, motion, vision, and safety systems into fully integrated, reliable, and high-performing industrial systems.

Responsibilities

  • Design and program PLC-based control systems using Allen-Bradley and Siemens platforms.
  • Develop and support robotic systems from initial concept through full integration into production environments.
  • Perform offline programming, simulation, and system validation for robotic and automation systems.
  • Integrate robotics, motion control, vision systems, sensors, and safety systems into complete automation solutions.
  • Commission automation systems both in-house and at customer sites, including domestic and international locations.
  • Troubleshoot system issues across electrical, mechanical, and controls components to ensure reliable operation.
  • Support and execute system testing to verify performance, reliability, and safety requirements.
  • Collaborate closely with mechanical, electrical, and project teams to deliver fully integrated systems on time.
  • Provide on-site customer support and training during installation, commissioning, and handoff.
  • Create and maintain comprehensive project documentation, including programs, schematics, and test records.
  • Specify robotics solutions, including payload, reach, safety requirements, and integration details.
  • Apply ISO standards and good engineering practices in controls design and implementation.
  • Use test equipment and diagnostic tools to validate hardware, software, and system performance.
  • Contribute to project planning and project management activities related to automation and robotics projects.

Essential Skills

  • 6+ years of experience in controls engineering, robotics, or industrial automation.
  • Strong PLC programming experience with Allen-Bradley and/or Siemens platforms.
  • Hands-on experience with industrial robotics systems such as Fanuc, KUKA, ABB, or Yaskawa.
  • Proven ability to perform offline programming and carry projects through full integration and commissioning.
  • Experience commissioning automated systems and custom machinery in industrial environments.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills across electrical, mechanical, and controls disciplines.
  • Experience specifying robotics, including payload, reach, safety requirements, and integration constraints.
  • Practical experience with controls design and automated systems software for industrial equipment.
  • Ability to debug hardware and software issues in PLCs, robotics, motion, and related systems.
  • Familiarity with test equipment and analog devices used in industrial control systems.
  • Knowledge of sensor systems, motion control, and vision system integration.
  • Understanding of ISO standards and their application in engineering design and controls.
  • Strong project management capabilities related to automation and robotics projects.
  • in electrical engineering or a closely related engineering discipline.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience integrating and tuning motion control systems for industrial automation.
  • Experience selecting, configuring, and integrating vision systems for inspection or guidance.
  • Comfort working in a project-based, fast-paced engineering environment with changing priorities.
  • Strong cross-functional collaboration skills with mechanical, electrical, and project teams.
  • Clear and professional communication skills for working with internal teams and customers.
  • Ability to create, organize, and maintain detailed technical and project documentation.
  • Degree in engineering or a related technical field is preferred but not required.

Work Environment

This is an on-site role in a hands-on engineering environment focused on robotics and advanced automation. Work is primarily project-based, offering variety across different systems and industries. Core working hours are approximately 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with flexibility around project needs.
