Job description

This position supports the CDPH's mission and strategic plan by performing a variety of skilled work in the operations, maintenance, and repair of heating, air conditioning, refrigeration systems, ventilation, lighting, power, water treatment, and other mechanical systems in support of the CDPH, Richmond Campus. The Stationary Engineer may instruct and/or lead other Stationary Engineers, Maintenance Mechanics, Building Maintenance Workers, and Service Assistants. In addition, this position may direct contractors in support of the infrastructure and equipment repairs.
The incumbent works under the general direction of the Chief Engineer II.
Stationary Engineers are provided with uniforms and free laundering.

The following pay differentials are applicable to this position:
  • Pay Differential 85 Night Shift: Shifts required to work 4 or more hours between 10pm and 6am are entitled to night shift pay (an extra $2/hour)
  • Pay Differential 409 Greater Bay Area Recruitment and Retention: provides 5% above the base rate for each qualifying pay period
  • Pay Differential 435 EPA Section 608 Technician Certification: $100/month for the required certification

Desirable Qualifications In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
  • Five (5) or more years maintaining commercial or industrial mechanical systems.
  • Knowledge of boilers, steam, chilled water, hot water, cooling towers, compressed air, vacuum, and industrial gas systems.
  • Experience with Building Automation Systems (BAS/BMS).
  • Ability to diagnose complex mechanical and electrical failures.
  • Experience performing preventive and predictive maintenance.
  • Knowledge of confined space entry, Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), arc flash awareness, and Cal/OSHA safety requirements.
  • Ability to interpret blueprints, P&IDs, engineering drawings, and technical manuals.
  • Strong troubleshooting, communication, teamwork, and emergency response skills.
  • Experience maintaining laboratory HVAC, refrigeration, or mission-critical facility systems preferred.
  • Commitment to workplace safety and customer service.
