What are some unique challenges of working the night shift as an oil rig roughneck, and how can I prepare for them?

Working the night shift as an oil rig roughneck can present challenges such as disrupted sleep patterns, increased fatigue, and heightened safety concerns due to lower visibility. It's important to establish a consistent sleep routine, use blackout curtains, and limit caffeine intake before rest periods. Team communication is especially crucial at night, so you’ll need to stay alert and proactively check in with coworkers to ensure tasks are completed safely. Many rigs provide additional safety briefings and support for night shift workers, helping you adapt and succeed in this demanding environment.

How much do roughnecks make on oil rigs per hour?

Night shift oil rig roughnecks typically earn between $20 and $40 per hour, depending on experience, location, and the specific company. Overtime and hazard pay can increase overall earnings, and the job often requires safety certifications and physical stamina.

Do oil rig workers work at night?

Night shift oil rig roughnecks work during overnight hours as part of a 24-hour operation schedule. They often work in rotating shifts, which can include nights, to ensure continuous operation and maintenance of the rig. This schedule requires adaptability and adherence to safety protocols in a demanding environment.

Job description

Night Shift Millwright
Night Owls. Gearheads. Problem-Solvers. This One's for You.
Join York Building Products
Some people sleep at night.
You keep the operation running.
If you're the type who prefers steel toes over dress shoes, tools over keyboards, and solving mechanical mysteries at 2:00 AM instead of staring at spreadsheets... welcome home.
At York Building Products, our night shift crew is the heartbeat of the operation. While the world sleeps, you'll be welding, troubleshooting, repairing, fabricating, and making sure the plant is ready to roll when the sun comes up.
We're looking for a hands-on, mechanically minded Night Shift Millwright who thrives in a fast-paced industrial environment and knows how to keep equipment running strong.
What You'll Be Doing
Your Shift Might Include:
  • Welding pipe and fabricating mechanical components
  • Repairing conveyors, gearboxes, bearings, and industrial machinery
  • Troubleshooting equipment issues before they become production problems
  • Operating hand tools, power tools, torches, and heavy equipment
  • Working with manlifts, telehandlers, and skid loaders
  • Performing preventative maintenance, oil changes, greasing, and inspections
  • Keeping production running safely and efficiently through the night
  • Working indoors, outdoors, on the ground, and occasionally high in the air
Who You Are
You might be our perfect Millwright if you:
  • Prefer working nights over sitting in traffic all morning
  • Love fixing things and figuring out how machinery works
  • Can think fast and troubleshoot under pressure
  • Know your way around tools, welding, and fabrication
  • Don't mind getting dirty and working hard
  • Take safety seriously
  • Work well with a team and show up ready to go
Qualifications:
  • Experience as a Millwright or similar mechanical role
  • Welding, fabrication, and pipe fitting experience
  • Knowledge of conveyor systems, bearings, and gearboxes
  • Experience with hand and power tools
  • Ability to diagnose and repair mechanical issues
  • Comfortable operating heavy equipment
  • Ability to work at heights and in physically demanding environments
  • Valid driver's license with clean driving record
Extra Cool If You Have:
  • Millwright or welding certifications
  • Industrial or manufacturing experience
  • The ability to fix things everyone else already gave up on
Why Night Shift Rocks Here
  • Competitive Pay
  • Medical, Dental & Vision Insurance
  • Retirement Plan
  • Life & Disability Insurance
  • Paid Time Off
  • Employee Assistance Program
  • Career Growth Opportunities
  • Long-Term Stability with a Family-Owned Company
The Environment
This role keeps you moving.
You'll work around heavy equipment and industrial machinery in indoor and outdoor environments with exposure to weather, dust, heat, cold, noise, and fast-paced production conditions.
Physical demands include:
  • Climbing
  • Bending
  • Lifting up to 90 pounds
  • Working from ladders, aerial lifts, and elevated platforms
Ready to Own the Night Shift?
If you're ready to put your mechanical skills to work with a company that values hard work, teamwork, and people who know how to keep things running, we want to hear from you.
Apply today and help keep York Building Products running strong - all night long.
