Job description

HVAC Controls | PLC Programming | Building Automation

We are seeking a hands-on Service Engineer / Controls Specialist with experience troubleshooting HVAC equipment and programming building automation or industrial control systems.

This is not a controls monitoring/operator position. We are looking for someone who can service HVAC equipment, troubleshoot controls, and actually program or modify PLC/DDC controllers. The right candidate can work through a problem from both sides—understand what the equipment should be doing, get into the controls to determine why it isn't doing it, make the necessary changes, and get the system operating correctly.

Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoot HVAC equipment, control systems, hardware, and software
  • Program and modify PLC and DDC controllers
  • Diagnose equipment and controls issues directly with customers
  • Perform control system inspections, maintenance, software updates, and upgrades
  • Configure HMI/user interface screens and control algorithms
  • Read and interpret P&IDs and sequences of operation
  • Perform point-to-point checks, functional testing, calibration, and tuning
  • Support control system startup and commissioning
  • Troubleshoot field installation and controls discrepancies
  • Configure networks and equipment interfaces
  • Develop redlines, test documentation, and service reports
  • Provide technical support to service technicians and customers
  • Participate in customer demonstrations and acceptance testing
  • Support ongoing service agreements and respond to customer issues
  • Participate in an on-call rotation
  • Travel to customer facilities for service, troubleshooting, startup, and installation support

Controls Experience

Experience programming and troubleshooting one or more of the following is highly desirable:

  • Rockwell – FactoryTalk, RSLogix / Studio 5000, PlantPAx
  • Tridium – Niagara N4
  • Johnson Controls – Metasys / Facility Explorer
  • Siemens – Apogee, PXC, Talon, DXR, Desigo CC or Insight
  • Distech – BACnet, LON, Eclypse Controllers
  • Kepware OPC
  • ThinManager
  • VMware
  • Python, VBA, or other scripting languages

HVAC / Building Automation Experience

Candidates should have experience with commercial or industrial HVAC and building automation systems.

Relevant experience includes:

  • Hands-on HVAC equipment troubleshooting and service
  • Building Automation Systems (BAS)
  • HVAC controls
  • Sequences of operation
  • P&IDs and plant utilities
  • Instrumentation and control valves
  • Functional performance testing
  • Point-to-point and loop checks
  • System startup and commissioning
  • Controls calibration and tuning

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical discipline OR equivalent hands-on industry experience
  • Experience servicing and troubleshooting commercial or industrial HVAC systems
  • Hands-on PLC, DDC, or controller programming experience
  • Ability to troubleshoot both the physical HVAC equipment and the control system
  • Understanding of mechanical and electrical systems found in commercial or industrial facilities
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently at customer sites
  • Strong customer-facing communication skills
  • Ability to participate in an on-call rotation and travel to customer facilities as required

Compensation & Benefits

Base Salary: $80,000–$105,000, depending on experience

  • Performance bonus opportunities
  • Travel incentives and per diem
  • Paid on-call rotation
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Generous PTO
  • Paid holidays
  • Professional training and certification opportunities

Ideal Candidate

The strongest candidate is someone who has worked directly on HVAC equipment AND knows how to program the controls running it. You should be comfortable troubleshooting a mechanical problem, reading the sequence of operations, accessing the controller or PLC, identifying programming or controls issues, making modifications, and verifying that the equipment is operating correctly.
