Night Shift Explosion Welding information

What is night shift explosion welding?

Night shift explosion welding is a specialized manufacturing job where workers use controlled explosive charges to bond two or more metal plates together during overnight hours. This process, known as explosion welding or explosive bonding, creates high-quality metal joints that are difficult to achieve with conventional welding methods. Working the night shift means employees typically work late evening to early morning, which can offer higher pay and different work-life balance compared to daytime shifts. Safety protocols are critical due to the use of explosives and heavy machinery. This job often requires physical stamina, technical skills, and strict adherence to safety standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a night shift explosion welding operator?

To thrive as a Night Shift Explosion Welding Operator, you need a solid understanding of metallurgy, welding processes, and safety protocols, often supported by a high school diploma and relevant welding certifications. Familiarity with explosion welding equipment, safety monitoring systems, and the ability to read technical blueprints are typically required. Attention to detail, strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to work independently during night hours set top candidates apart. These skills are crucial for ensuring safe operations, product quality, and adherence to strict safety and production standards in a high-risk environment.

What are the typical challenges faced by professionals working the night shift in explosion welding, and how can they be managed?

Working the night shift in explosion welding presents unique challenges, such as maintaining alertness and focus during off-peak hours and adapting to a reversed sleep schedule. Safety is paramount, as the process involves handling high-energy materials and equipment, so strict adherence to protocols and teamwork is essential. Effective communication with day-shift colleagues helps ensure smooth handovers and continuity of work. Additionally, professionals often manage fatigue by establishing consistent routines and taking advantage of scheduled breaks to maintain performance and safety.

What is the difference between Night Shift Explosion Welding vs Night Shift Pipe Welder?

AspectNight Shift Explosion WeldingNight Shift Pipe Welder
CredentialsCertification in explosion welding techniques, safety trainingWelding certifications (e.g., API, AWS), pipefitting licenses
Work EnvironmentIndustrial facilities, specialized welding setups, often outdoorsRefineries, construction sites, industrial plants, confined spaces
Industry UsageHeavy industries, pipeline construction, specialized manufacturingOil & gas, water treatment, chemical processing

Night Shift Explosion Welding and Night Shift Pipe Welder roles share commonalities in industry and safety requirements but differ in techniques and work environments. Explosion welding involves specialized, high-energy bonding processes, while pipe welding focuses on joining pipes using traditional welding methods. Both roles require safety certifications and are vital in industrial construction and maintenance.

  • Set, adjust, and monitor welding parameters to ensure weld quality and compliance with standards

  • Perform repair work by removing defects, preparing weld surfaces, and supporting quality and production teams

Job description

Sub Arc Welder – Long Seam or Girth Seam

Night Shift (6 PM – 6 AM)

Who We Are

At North Shore Steel and our affiliated companies, we produce large-diameter pipe and structural products that require precision welding to meet demanding industry standards.

Our girth seam welders play a critical role in final weld integrity, work that directly impacts quality, safety, and performance in the field.

If you’re a Sub Arc welder who understands full-circumference welds, tie-ins, and maintaining consistency through rotation, this is where your skillset stands out.

Position Summary

As a Sub Arc Long Seam Welder, you will operate and manage Submerged Arc Welding (SAW) systems to produce high-quality long-seam welds on pipe and structural components.

This role is focused on repeatable, high-quality production welding, requiring a strong understanding of machine setup, weld parameters, and quality standards. You will also support repair work when defects are identified, working closely with Quality and production teams.

This is a night shift role (6 PM – 6 AM) and requires a welder who is dependable, detail-oriented, and able to maintain focus and consistency throughout the shift.

What You’ll Be Responsible For

  • Operate Submerged Arc Welding (SAW) equipment for long seam welding
  • Perform long-seam welds on pipe/cylinders
  • Set and adjust welding parameters to maintain proper penetration and bead profile per code requirements
  • Execute clean starts, stops, and tie-ins with minimal defects
  • Monitor weld performance throughout rotation and adjust as needed
  • Read and interpret Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS), blueprints, and weld symbols
  • Perform carbon arc gouging and grinding to remove defects when required
  • Prepare weld surfaces, including cleaning
  • Maintain welding equipment in safe, working conditions
  • Keep work area clean, organized, and aligned with safety standards

What It Takes to Be Successful

  • Proven experience operating Submerged Arc Welding (SAW) equipment
  • Strong understanding of weld parameters, heat input, and deposition control
  • Experience in pipe welding or large structural steel fabrication
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and welding schematics
  • Working knowledge of applicable standards (API, AWS, ASME)
  • Experience with multi-process welding environments (SAW, MIG, FCAW, SMAW)
  • Ability to identify weld defects and support repair processes
  • Strong attention to detail with a focus on consistency and quality
  • Reliable and able to maintain performance during 12-hour night shifts

Preferred Experience (Strongly Valued)

  • Experience with long-seam pipe welding in a production environment
  • Familiarity with AWS and ASME standards for pipe manufacturing
  • Prior experience in high-volume, automated or semi-automated welding operations
  • Experience welding tandem electrodes

Girth Seam (please see Girth Seam job posting)

  • Experience with large-diameter pipe girth welding
  • Prior work in API-regulated environments
  • Experience working alongside NDE (X-ray/UT) quality processes
