Job description

The CNC Machinist II is responsible for independently setting up, operating, inspecting, and troubleshooting CNC machining work for standard production jobs. This role requires the ability to perform full setups, read complex prints, apply common GD&T requirements, make basic program edits, select appropriate tooling, and complete in-process inspection to ensure parts meet quality and production standards.

A CNC Machinist II is a fully independent machinist for standard production work. This role is expected to maintain productivity and quality, resolve common machining issues, support simultaneous operations where applicable, and assist less experienced machinists or operators as needed.

Key Responsibilities

Machine Setup, Operation, and Productivity

•Independently set up and operate CNC machines for standard production work using setup sheets, work instructions, fixtures, tooling, and approved programs.

•Perform fixture changeovers, tool loading, tool touch-offs, work offsets, and machine preparation required for assigned jobs.

•Adjust feeds, speeds, offsets, and cutting parameters within established guidelines to maintain part quality and process stability.

•Perform basic program edits at the machine as needed and within training level and authorization.

•Support quality and efficiency by managing setup times, production flow, and simultaneous operations where applicable.

•Monitor equipment, tooling, and part conditions throughout production and respond appropriately to prevent scrap, rework, or downtime.

Blueprint Reading, GD&T, and Inspection

•Read and interpret complex prints, specifications, dimensions, tolerances, notes, and work instructions.

•Understand and apply common GD&T controls and datum requirements during setup, machining, and inspection.

•Perform full in-process inspection using calipers, micrometers, indicators, gauges, and other required measuring instruments.

•Verify that parts meet dimensional, visual, and customer requirements before continuing production or releasing work to the next operation.

•Identify nonconforming or questionable parts and follow procedures for escalation, containment, documentation, and corrective action support.

•Maintain accurate production and inspection records in accordance with company procedures.

Troubleshooting, Tooling, and Materials

•Resolve common machining issues related to tooling, offsets, surface finish, dimensional variation, fixturing, and machine conditions.

•Select appropriate tooling independently for standard work and recommend tooling changes when needed.

•Understand the machining behavior of common and difficult-to-machine materials and make appropriate adjustments within established guidelines.

•Perform fixture changeovers and ensure machine is properly secured, aligned, and suitable for the operation.

•Communicate recurring production, quality, tooling, or equipment concerns to supervisors, leads, engineering, or quality personnel as appropriate.

Team Support and Continuous Improvement

•Assist CNC Operators and CNC Machinist I employees with job setup, inspection questions, troubleshooting, and process understanding as needed.

•Suggest improvements to setup methods, tooling, inspection methods, safety, quality, and production efficiency.

•Support cross-functional problem resolution with supervisors, leads, quality, engineering, production, and maintenance personnel.

•Maintain a clean, safe, organized work area and model safe work practices for less experienced employees.

•Support training and knowledge sharing to improve department capability and consistency.

Qualifications

Education

•High school diploma or GED required.

•Technical school, vocational machining training, apprenticeship coursework, or equivalent manufacturing training preferred.

Required Experience

•Minimum of three years of CNC machining experience

•Experience performing full CNC machine setups independently

•Experience reading complex prints and applying common GD&T requirements.

•Experience performing in-process inspection using standard measuring tools

•Experience with basic G-code edits at the machine.

Skills and Competencies

•Ability to independently set up and operate CNC machines for standard production work.

•Ability to read complex prints, specifications, dimensions, and tolerances.

•Working knowledge of common GD&T controls and inspection requirements.

•Ability to perform full in-process inspection using calipers, micrometers, indicators, gauges, and related tools.

•Ability to adjust feeds, speeds, offsets, and cutting parameters to maintain quality and productivity.

•Ability to perform basic G-code edits at the machine within training level and authorization.

•Strong tooling, machining, and material knowledge for standard and moderately complex machining work.

•Ability to troubleshoot common machining issues and identify opportunities for improvement.

•Ability to assist and support less experienced operators and machinists.

•Strong attention to detail, accountability, teamwork, and commitment to safety and quality.

Direct Reports

•None.

However, this position will be tasked to provide technical guidance, training support, and day-to-day assistance to CNC Operators and less experienced machinists as assigned.
