Job description

Position Summary
The Gas Meter Reader, Sr. is responsible for reading meters and recording data at scheduled stops in a route. Recognizes irregularities such as meter tampering, power diversions and hazardous conditions and reports to appropriate staff. May perform duties to assist Gas Service Technicians and in the process obtain on-the-job training for other jobs in the Gas system.
Primary Position Responsibilities
  • Drives to customer premises, gains physical access to meter locations which may involve traversing all types of terrain and maneuvering around obstacles such as fences, gates, dogs, and shrubs.
  • Follows scheduled route for meter reading, progressing from one location to the next.
  • Checks that number on meter matches number in handheld before entering meter data.
  • Looks for indications of problems such as broken or stuck meter indexes.
  • Calls certain customers before reading the meter.
  • Communicates respectfully with customers when present while reading meter.
  • Communicates with other meter readers and helps in other routes as needed.
  • Maintains a high level of meter reading accuracy.
  • Complies with established CoServ safety and operating rules, procedures and guidelines including reporting unsafe practices to a supervisor.
  • Complies with established CoServ Information Security Handbook, policies, procedures, and guidelines including reporting suspected information security incidents to Tech Support.

Secondary Position Responsibilities
  • Receives training as directed by management.
  • Attends regularly scheduled safety meetings.
  • Attends CPR/First Aid Training and other training as required.
  • Installs, maintains, and troubleshoots automated Encoder Receiver Transmitter (ERT) modules.
  • Attends CoServ University required training.
  • Performs other duties and activities as directed.

  • None.

Position Requirements
Education, Experience, and Certifications Required
  • High School Diploma or G.E.D equivalency.
  • Must have four (4) years of meter reading experience.

Skills and Abilities Required
  • Ability to understand and follow maps.
  • Ability to identify and read different types of meters.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and answer questions.
  • Ability to learn Companies policies, rules, regulations, and procedures.
  • Ability to learn service area and distribution system.

Skills and Abilities Preferred
  • None.

Physical Requirements
  • Works outdoors 90% of the time in all types of weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 35 pounds.
  • Drives company vehicle.
  • Works extended hours as needed or directed.
  • Walks 3 to 5 miles per day.
  • Works in potentially hazardous conditions caused by pets and wildlife in or near the work site.
  • Works in areas with possible exposure to poison oak, poison ivy, and insect stings.
  • Operates office equipment such as a computer, telephone, fax machine, copier, etc.

  • Must have and maintain a valid Texas driver's license.
