What is NHL analytics?

NHL analytics refers to the use of statistical analysis and data-driven methods to evaluate players, teams, and strategies in the National Hockey League. This field involves collecting and analyzing data such as player performance, puck possession, shot quality, and other advanced metrics to gain insights that can help teams make more informed decisions. NHL analytics professionals use tools like data tracking software and statistical modeling to identify trends and improve team performance. The goal is to supplement traditional scouting and coaching with objective, quantitative information.

What are the typical projects and collaborations involved in an NHL Analytics role?

Job description

Description
About the team
The FanSided network, part of the Minute Media family, features more than 300 websites covering a variety of sports, entertainment and lifestyle topics. Launched in 2007, FanSided is one of the industry's fastest-growing digital content networks and includes sites dedicated to every major professional sports team, all of the nation's top college athletic programs, popular TV shows, movies and other celebrated sports, culture, tech and entertainment categories.
Overview:
FanSided is looking for its next professional fan! We are looking for a creative, knowledgeable sports writer to join the FanSided editorial team and help deliver timely, engaging coverage across our NBA or NHL network.
This role is ideal for someone who lives and breathes sports, understands what fans are talking about, and can quickly turn breaking news, trending storylines, rumors, games, and major league moments into compelling content. Depending on your area of expertise, your primary focus will be on either NBA or NHL coverage. You do not need to be an expert in both leagues, but you should bring deep knowledge and genuine year-round passion for at least one.
What You'll Do:
  • Write timely, engaging NBA or NHL content, including breaking news, analysis, opinion pieces, game coverage, trending topics, and feature stories.
  • Maintain a high-volume publishing schedule, typically producing 25-35 articles per week, or approximately 120-150 pieces per month.
  • Most content will typically range from 500-700 words, with opportunities for longer-form features and other formats depending on the story and editorial needs.
  • Stay closely connected to major storylines, players, teams, trades, rumors, games, and conversations happening across your area of expertise, quickly identifying compelling angles and turning breaking or trending news into engaging content.
  • Write from a fan-first perspective, understanding the unique interests and conversations surrounding different teams and fan bases.
  • Use SEO, audience data, social trends, and editorial guidance to strengthen story selection, headlines, reach, and overall performance.
  • Collaborate with editors, writers, contributors, and team leadership to execute content strategies, share story ideas, and meet editorial and audience goals.
  • Help build strong and engaged fan communities across FanSided sites and associated social platforms while maintaining FanSided's editorial standards, voice, and best practices.
  • Be flexible during key sports moments, including games, playoffs, trades, free agency, breaking news, and other peak coverage periods.

Requirements
What You Have:
  • 1+ years of digital sports writing or editorial experience covering the NBA or NHL, with deep knowledge and genuine year-round passion for your area of expertise.
  • Strong understanding of teams, players, storylines, league trends, history, and the topics and conversations that resonate with fans.
  • A confident, engaging writing voice with the ability to quickly brainstorm, write, and edit clean, compelling content in a fast-paced digital environment.
  • Ability to manage a high-volume publishing schedule, balance multiple priorities, and quickly pivot when breaking news or major storylines emerge.
  • Basic understanding of SEO, audience development, social media, and strategies for growing reach and fan engagement.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, along with an organized, self-motivated approach to working independently in a remote environment.
  • Flexibility to work nights, weekends, holidays, and peak news cycles when sports coverage requires it.

Bonus
  • Experience creating short-form vertical content for TikTok, Instagram Reels, or YouTube Shorts.
  • Newsletter writing experience.
  • Podcasting or other multimedia experience.
  • Experience engaging directly with sports communities through social media, comments, live chats, or other fan platforms.

Where You'll Be:
We follow a remote-first approach to give you more options.
The expected salary range for this position is between $50,000 and $55,000 annually. Actual pay will be determined based on skills, experience, and location. The benefits available for this position include flexible vacation policy, 15 paid holidays, paid parental leave, health insurance, 401(k) retirement plan.
Not sure that you're 100% qualified but are up for the challenge? We want you to apply!
