What is next generation sequencing?

A Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) job involves working with advanced DNA and RNA sequencing technologies to analyze genetic material. Professionals in this field may design experiments, prepare biological samples, operate sequencing instruments, and interpret genomic data. Roles can vary from research scientists and bioinformaticians to lab technicians and data analysts. NGS is widely used in medicine, agriculture, and biotechnology for applications such as disease research, personalized medicine, and evolutionary studies. Strong skills in molecular biology, computational analysis, and data interpretation are typically required.

What does someone working in next generation sequencing do?

Professionals in Next Generation Sequencing typically spend their days preparing and processing biological samples, operating sequencing instruments, and analyzing genomic data. They are responsible for troubleshooting technical issues, maintaining laboratory equipment, and ensuring quality control throughout the sequencing workflow. Collaboration with cross-functional teams—such as bioinformaticians, clinicians, and research scientists—is common to interpret sequencing results and contribute to project goals. This role also involves detailed record-keeping and adherence to regulatory or laboratory standards, making organization and communication important aspects of the job.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in next generation sequencing?

To excel in a Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) role, you need a strong background in molecular biology, genomics, and data analysis, often supported by a degree in a life science field. Proficiency with NGS platforms (such as Illumina or Oxford Nanopore), laboratory automation tools, and bioinformatics software is highly valued, alongside relevant certifications in genomics or molecular diagnostics. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective teamwork and communication skills set successful professionals apart. These competencies ensure high-quality sequencing results, efficient workflow, and productive collaboration in fast-paced research or clinical environments.
