Job description

Job Description
ABC 8/FOX Appalachia is seeking a dynamic, high-impact News Anchor to lead our newscasts and help shape the future of local journalism in Appalachia. This is not a "read-the-news" position-this is a leadership role inside a forward-thinking newsroom where anchors are central to editorial decision-making, storytelling innovation, and audience connection.
Charleston, WV offers a unique opportunity for an anchor to stand out and grow. As the state capital, it sits at the center of major political, economic, and community stories. At the same time, it offers an unmatched quality of life-affordable living, short commutes, and immediate access to outdoor recreation. It's a place where you can build both a high-profile career and a balanced life, while doing journalism that truly matters.
At WCHS, our anchors don't just present the news-they lead coverage, mentor teams, and drive content across platforms.
What You'll Do at Eyewitness News
As an Evening Anchor, you will be a central leader in our newsroom and a key driver of daily content. You will:
  • Anchor newscasts with confidence, clarity, and credibility
  • Actively participate in daily editorial meetings, helping shape rundowns and coverage strategy
  • Produce and contribute original content across broadcast, digital, and social platforms
  • Write in a clear, conversational, audience-focused style
  • Deliver compelling live coverage in breaking news and major event situations
  • Build strong connections with viewers through consistent social media engagement
  • Collaborate closely with producers, reporters, and digital teams to elevate storytelling
  • Mentor and support MMJs and producers as part of a team-first newsroom culture
  • Represent the station in the community through events, initiatives, and public engagement

What Makes ABC 8/FOX Appalachia and Charleston a Great Fit
  • A newsroom built for growth and innovation - anchors are empowered to lead, not just read
  • A market where you can stand out - your work will be seen, valued, and impactful
  • Affordable, high-quality living - Charleston offers a strong lifestyle advantage over larger markets
  • Endless storytelling opportunities - from state government to deeply rooted Appalachian culture
  • Outdoor access unmatched in most TV markets - hiking, rafting, skiing, all within an easy drive
  • A team culture that prioritizes collaboration, accountability, and winning

This is a place where strong anchors become market leaders quickly.
What We're Looking For
The ideal candidate is more than a strong presenter-they are a newsroom leader and a competitive storyteller.
  • Proven leadership ability in a newsroom environment
  • Smooth, engaging, and authoritative on-air delivery
  • Strong writing skills with excellent news judgment
  • Ability to produce content independently when needed (shoot/edit experience a plus)
  • Exceptional communication and collaboration skills
  • Passion for innovation and evolving audience engagement strategies
  • Strong presence on social media with the ability to grow audience interaction

Requirements & Qualifications
  • Minimum 4 years of on-air experience
  • Live commercial television experience is required
  • Strong live reporting and breaking news skills
  • Exceptional conversational writing ability
  • Demonstrated editorial judgment and ethical standards
  • A link to your demo reel must be included with your application
