What can I do with a BS neuroscience degree?

A BS in neuroscience prepares individuals for roles such as neurobehavioral technician, research assistant, or laboratory technician, often requiring knowledge of neuroanatomy, data analysis, and laboratory skills. Graduates can work in clinical, research, or healthcare settings, and may pursue further certifications or advanced degrees for more specialized positions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Neurobehavioral Scientist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Neurobehavioral Scientist, you need a solid background in neuroscience, psychology, data analysis, and often a graduate degree such as a Ph.D. or M.S. in a related field. Familiarity with neuroimaging tools (like fMRI or EEG), statistical software (such as SPSS or R), and research methodologies is typically required. Critical thinking, attention to detail, and strong communication skills help professionals interpret complex data and collaborate effectively with research teams. These competencies are crucial for producing reliable research, advancing scientific understanding, and translating findings into real-world applications.

What are some typical collaborative projects for professionals in neurobehavioral science, and how does teamwork impact research outcomes?

Professionals in neurobehavioral science often work on interdisciplinary teams, collaborating with neuroscientists, psychologists, physicians, and data analysts to investigate the relationships between brain function and behavior. Team-based projects may include clinical trials, cognitive assessments, and neuroimaging studies. Effective teamwork helps integrate diverse expertise, ensuring that research is comprehensive and findings are robust. This collaborative approach not only enhances scientific discovery but also provides opportunities for skill development and professional growth.

What is neurobehavioral science?

Neurobehavioral science is an interdisciplinary field that explores the relationship between the brain, nervous system, and behavior. It combines principles from neuroscience, psychology, and behavioral science to understand how brain function affects actions, emotions, and cognitive processes. Professionals in this field study neurological disorders, brain injuries, and mental health conditions to better diagnose and treat behavioral and cognitive issues. Their work often contributes to advancements in therapies and interventions for conditions like autism, ADHD, and traumatic brain injury.

Job description

Battelle delivers when others can't. We conduct research and development, manage national laboratories, design and manufacture products and deliver critical services for our clients-whether they are a multi-national corporation, a small start-up or a government agency.
We recognize and appreciate the value and contributions of individuals from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences and welcome all qualified individuals to apply.
Job Summary
Battelle delivers scientific excellence in support of national security, human performance, and health-related mission needs. We are seeking a Senior Neurobehavioral Scientist to lead the design, execution, and interpretation of nonclinical neurobehavioral studies evaluating central nervous system (CNS) and behavioral outcomes following defined exposures, including biological agents, chemicals/inhalation, ionizing and non-ionizing energy, and acoustic/sonic/blast modalities.
In this role, you will serve as a Principal Investigator, partnering closely with multidisciplinary teams (exposure operations, toxicology, electrophysiology, pathology, imaging, and biomarker science) to deliver rigorous, reproducible datasets and sponsor-ready technical reports. You will define modality-appropriate behavioral batteries, develop longitudinal study designs, integrate exposure characterization with behavioral and physiological readouts, and clearly communicate findings and uncertainties to diverse stakeholders.
Responsibilities
  • Translate sponsor objectives into exposure-effect study designs, endpoints, and decision criteria.
  • Develop, select and/or validate behavioral assays tailored to exposure modality and mechanism of action; establish baseline and follow-up schedules.
  • Oversee in vivo neurobehavioral testing, ensuring adherence to SOPs, GDP, and GLP requirements (when applicable).
  • Integrate multimodal data streams-including telemetry/EEG, imaging, and pathology-with behavioral outcomes.
  • Apply robust quantitative methods and maintain reproducible QC and analysis pipelines.
  • Author IACUC protocols and uphold compliance with AAALAC, OLAW, USDA, and related frameworks.
  • Collaborate with biosafety, chemical safety, radiation safety, and industrial hygiene teams.
  • Lead project scope, schedule, and budget; mentor staff; engage sponsors; support proposals.

Key Qualifications
  • PhD in Behavioral Neuroscience, Neuroscience, Pharmacology, Psychology, or related field with 5+ years postdoc/industry experience OR MS with 10+ years focused on in vivo neurobehavioral research.
  • Demonstrated leadership of exposure-effect studies from design through sponsor reporting.
  • Hands-on proficiency with multiple behavioral domains and longitudinal designs.
  • Experience collaborating with exposure science teams (inhalation, acoustic, radiation) and integrating exposure metadata.
  • Strong statistics and data analysis skills; IACUC authorship; knowledge of AAALAC/OLAW/USDA and GLP.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with inhalation toxicology, acoustic/sonic/blast paradigms, radiation, or biologics/immune-modulating models.
  • Expertise with EEG/EMG telemetry, seizure detection, sleep analysis, or ML tools like DeepLabCut.
  • CRO or sponsor-facing experience; proposal development; ISO 17025 familiarity.
