Position Summary Information
Definition
PART-TIME, ASSOCIATE FACULTY POOL
Applications for Part-Time, Associate Faculty pools are continually accepted (unless otherwise specified) by the District and will be added to the application pool for review by hiring authorities on an as-needed basis. Should you be invited for an interview, you will be contacted by a District representative.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Deliver engaging and effective instruction in networking fundamentals, including topics such as IP addressing, subnetting, routing, switching, security fundamentals, and basic network troubleshooting.
  • Teach using Cisco Networking Academy curriculum (NetAcad) or equivalent instructional materials.
  • Conduct in-person or virtual lectures, hands-on labs, assessments, and classroom discussions.
  • Set up, maintain, and troubleshoot lab equipment including real Cisco hardware for practical student exercises.
  • Provide guidance and support to students preparing for the CCNA certification exam.
  • Maintain accurate records of attendance, progress, and grades in accordance with institutional policies.
  • Stay current with industry trends and Cisco technologies; update course content as needed.
  • Foster a supportive and inclusive learning environment appropriate for high school learners.
  • Participate in departmental meetings, curriculum planning, and professional development activities as needed.

Assignment
This position is a part-time position as an Associate Instructor. The teaching assignment may require teaching lecture-discussion courses during day, evening or on Saturday and/or in an on-line/distance education format. The assignments are as needed, during Spring, Summer, and/or Fall semesters. This position is represented by the West Valley-Mission Federation of Teachers (WVMFT / AFT Local 6554).
Work location: West Valley College, Saratoga, CA
Salary and Benefits
Salary is based on a percentage of workload, up to a maximum of 67% of a full-time load. Salary is prorated based on an initial hiring salary range of $38,464 - $55,582 per semester; and is based on academic achievement, teaching and related experience.
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience: Any associate degree and six years of professional experience in networking, IT infrastructure, or a related field; OR any bachelor's degree and two years of professional experience in networking, IT infrastructure, or a related field.
AND
Certification: Current and valid Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) certification.

AND
Demonstrated ability to effectively teach, counsel or work with persons of diverse socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds.
Desired Qualifications
The ideal candidate will also demonstrate the following desired qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Networking, Information Technology, Computer Science, or a closed related field.
  • At least 1 year of teaching, training, or mentoring experience in a classroom or technical training environment is preferred.
  • Additional Cisco certifications such as CCNP are a plus.
  • Experience teaching or mentoring high school students or younger learners is highly desirable.
  • Strong understanding of networking concepts including LAN/WAN, TCP/IP, IPv4/IPv6, routing protocols (e.g., OSPF, EIGRP), VLANs, and network security.
  • Proficiency in configuring and troubleshooting real Cisco routers, switches, and other networking hardware.
  • Experience with Packet Tracer or other network simulators/emulators as teaching tools, in addition to working with physical equipment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively engage younger learners.
  • Ability to explain technical concepts to high school students and adult learners with diverse backgrounds and experience levels.
  • Commitment to student success and continuous improvement.
  • Patience and adaptability in working with teenage and adult learners at different skill levels.
Examples of Duties and Responsibilities
Instructional duties and assignments may consist of one or more of the following:
  • Provide instruction for assigned courses. This includes preparation for in-class or on-line/distance education activities, evaluation of students' work, consultation with students outside of class and/or on-line, maintenance of currency in the subjects taught.
  • Maintain accurate class and other records required by the college.
  • Submit, when due, attendance rosters and grade reports.
  • Follow course outlines as filed in the instruction offices.
  • Maintain office hours each week, at .5 hours per week per section.
  • Observe, support and enforce the regulations, policies and programs of the District and college.
  • Provide each student with a written course syllabus at the beginning of the course, as per instructions in the Faculty Handbook.
  • Refer students to appropriate college sources for information on counseling and other student services.
  • Assist students by providing advice on requirements for successful achievement in the members' area of expertise.
  • Work cooperatively within the college community.
  • Foster an environment that protects academic freedom within the college community.
  • Foster a positive working environment that is free from harassment, prejudice and/or bias.
  • Demonstrate a respect for the dignity of each individual.
