What jobs are in computer networking?

Network jobs refer to roles that involve the design, implementation, management, and troubleshooting of computer networks. These positions can include network administrators, network engineers, and network technicians, who are responsible for ensuring the smooth operation and security of data communication systems within organizations. Network jobs are essential for maintaining connectivity, supporting communication, and enabling the sharing of resources such as files and internet access across computers and devices.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a network engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Network Engineer, you need strong knowledge of networking protocols, infrastructure design, troubleshooting, and a relevant degree or certification such as CCNA or CompTIA Network+. Familiarity with network hardware, firewalls, routers, switches, and management tools like Wireshark or SolarWinds is typically required. Analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills for diagnosing issues and collaborating with IT teams. These skills and qualities are critical for ensuring network reliability, security, and optimal performance in modern organizations.

What is the difference between a network engineer and a network administrator?

A network engineer is responsible for designing and building a network, as well as for acquiring and locating required physical components. A network administrator is responsible for the daily functionality of the network, ensuring reliability and data security. Admins create and remove users and group permissions, following best practices for network security. Both jobs require specialized technical knowledge and coordination with stakeholders throughout the organization.

What are some typical challenges faced by network engineers in maintaining network security, and how can they be addressed?

Network engineers often encounter challenges such as managing vulnerabilities from outdated hardware or software, mitigating the risks of unauthorized access, and responding to evolving cyber threats. To address these issues, engineers regularly update and patch systems, implement robust firewalls, and use intrusion detection systems. Collaborating closely with the IT security team and staying current with industry best practices are also essential strategies for maintaining a secure and resilient network environment.

Job description

ABOUT RETURNPRO

Retailers have spent decades perfecting the forward supply chain. Returns are the last unsolved frontier, and ReturnPro is solving it. We built the first fully integrated, technology-enabled reverse logistics and ReCommerce platform, unifying distribution, refurbishment, recovery analytics, and disposition strategy into one scalable network.

Across North America, returns are one of retail's largest unsolved problems. They erode margins, disrupt logistics, damage customer experience, and generate enormous waste. Through our integrated solution spanning SaaS technology, reverse supply chain services, and recommerce, we turn returns from a cost center into a recovery engine. To date, we've diverted more than 100 million pounds of product from landfills, and we're just getting started.

This is not incremental improvement. This is redefining how retailers handle returns at scale. Our U.S. and Canadian facilities operate as one network โ€” shared systems, shared standards, shared scoreboard โ€” and Calgary is the next node. At ReturnPro, returns are a strategic advantage, and we are professionalizing this space on both sides of the border with disciplined execution, data-driven performance, and measurable results.

GREENFIELD LAUNCH

SITE P&L OWNERSHIP

CROSS-BORDER NETWORK

CULTURE BUILDER

THE OPPORTUNITY: YOUR BUILDING. YOUR TEAM.

This is the rare GM seat where you donโ€™t inherit a building โ€” you create one. ReturnPro is opening its newest Canadian facility in Calgary, and you will be its first hire. Youโ€™ll pick your team, shape the floor, set the standards, and own end-to-end execution โ€” safety, growth, profitability, productivity, quality, and cost across return to vendor, liquidation, fulfillment, testing, and repair. No layers between you and the outcome.

This isnโ€™t just a role โ€” itโ€™s the chance to add a chapter to ReturnProโ€™s legacy of solving returns. Youโ€™ll build a high-performance culture from the ground up, backed by a proven playbook from our U.S. and Canadian facilities: labor allocated by program and activity, UPH and MPU visibility down to the teammate level, and partners across the border whoโ€™ve done this before. Calgary is yours to build โ€” and the network is behind you.

WHAT YOUโ€™LL OWN

Facility Launch & Team Building

  • Serve as hire #1: lead the end-to-end launch of ReturnProโ€™s newest Canadian facility โ€” from site readiness and equipment installation through first receipt and first ship
  • Build your team from the ground up: recruit and onboard the managers, supervisors, and hourly teammates who will define this building โ€” every hire after you inherits the culture you set
  • Define what high performance looks like on day one: set the standards, model them on the floor, and make accountability a point of pride before the first unit ships
  • Stand up systems, SOPs, and safety programs in partnership with our U.S. and Canadian facilities โ€” adopt whatโ€™s proven across the network, adapt what Calgary needs

Operations & Performance

  • Run the site like itโ€™s your business: own daily and weekly operational plans, beat client SLAs, and squeeze maximum efficiency out of every shift
  • Set operational goals from KPIs and client SLAs; drive throughput (UPH), accuracy, and quality across receiving, check-in, testing, put-away, pick, pack, and ship
  • Own inventory accuracy and control; read the reports, find the gaps, and close them across productivity, accuracy, quality, and expense
  • Balance labor against volume daily using program- and activity-level labor allocation โ€” know exactly where every hour goes, and deploy it where it earns the most
  • Track production against plan with UPH and MPU metrics; catch drift early and correct it before it ever touches the P&L
  • Own the money: site P&L, budget, and General Ledger โ€” analyze financial performance and deliver profitability against plan

Client & Business Partnership

  • Be the face of ReturnPro in Western Canada: build client relationships in support of a keep-and-grow strategy; partner with key account management on QBRs and monthly reporting
  • Partner with Industrial Engineers and facility leaders across our U.S. and Canadian network to import proven Standard Operating Procedures โ€” then make Calgary the new benchmark
  • Investigate operational errors to determine root cause and recommend corrective action; maintain audit-ready documentation at all times
  • Embed lean and continuous improvement discipline across the facility โ€” prioritize the highest-impact gaps and prove the results in the numbers
  • Interact effectively at multiple levels; demonstrate on-the-floor listening and follow-up that builds trust with clients, teammates, and corporate partners

People Leadership & Culture

  • Attract, develop, and retain top Canadian talent through active coaching and top grading; promote from within as the building grows
  • Manage a diverse teammate population; nurture positive teammate relations and a productive work environment across all shifts
  • Develop, implement, and direct equipment preventative maintenance programs and facility building and grounds upkeep
  • Ensure equipment and work areas are neat, clean, and well organized; enforce corporate policies and procedures across the site
  • Implement and observe all safety policies and procedures to maintain a safe, compliant work environment aligned with Alberta OHS and all applicable Canadian requirements

WHAT YOU BRING

Experience & Background

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in business, logistics, management, or related field
  • 8+ years leading 200+ associates in logistics, warehouse, or inventory operations, with demonstrated management qualifications
  • High level of reverse logistics and distribution business acumen; greenfield launch or facility start-up experience strongly preferred
  • P&L ownership: budget preparation, GL management, cost control, and performance reporting
  • Six Sigma, lean, or related certification or training strongly preferred
  • Working knowledge of Canadian health, safety, and environmental standards (Alberta OHS, WCB) and compliance requirements; legally eligible to work in Canada

Skills & Competencies

  • Data-driven operator: fluent in labor productivity metrics (UPH, MPU, cost per unit), reads reports and KPIs, identifies the right levers, and drives execution to target
  • Excellent interpersonal, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills; confident building relationships across clients and all levels of the business
  • People leader: attracts, develops, and retains talent through coaching and top grading; holds a high bar with integrity
  • Excellent verbal and written communicator โ€” credible with clients, executives, and the floor alike
  • Strong time management and project management skills; manages competing priorities without dropping the ball
  • Operates with integrity, professionalism, and a bias toward action

HOW WE WORK

ReturnProโ€™s culture is built around five core values that show up in behavior, not just on walls:

People-Centric Excellence

We put our teammates first. High performance and human dignity are not in tension.

Adaptive Evolution

The industry is changing fast. We evolve faster.

Value-Driven Partnerships

We show up for our customers and each other with integrity and follow-through.

Practical Sustainability

We build for the long term operationally, environmentally, and as a team.

Continuous Improvement

Good enough never is. We challenge every process, every week.
