What jobs are in computer networking?

Network jobs refer to roles that involve the design, implementation, management, and troubleshooting of computer networks. These positions can include network administrators, network engineers, and network technicians, who are responsible for ensuring the smooth operation and security of data communication systems within organizations. Network jobs are essential for maintaining connectivity, supporting communication, and enabling the sharing of resources such as files and internet access across computers and devices.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a network engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Network Engineer, you need strong knowledge of networking protocols, infrastructure design, troubleshooting, and a relevant degree or certification such as CCNA or CompTIA Network+. Familiarity with network hardware, firewalls, routers, switches, and management tools like Wireshark or SolarWinds is typically required. Analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills for diagnosing issues and collaborating with IT teams. These skills and qualities are critical for ensuring network reliability, security, and optimal performance in modern organizations.

What is the difference between a network engineer and a network administrator?

A network engineer is responsible for designing and building a network, as well as for acquiring and locating required physical components. A network administrator is responsible for the daily functionality of the network, ensuring reliability and data security. Admins create and remove users and group permissions, following best practices for network security. Both jobs require specialized technical knowledge and coordination with stakeholders throughout the organization.

What are some typical challenges faced by network engineers in maintaining network security, and how can they be addressed?

Network engineers often encounter challenges such as managing vulnerabilities from outdated hardware or software, mitigating the risks of unauthorized access, and responding to evolving cyber threats. To address these issues, engineers regularly update and patch systems, implement robust firewalls, and use intrusion detection systems. Collaborating closely with the IT security team and staying current with industry best practices are also essential strategies for maintaining a secure and resilient network environment.

What is the difference between Network vs Network Administrator?

The Network role is more strategic, while the Network Administrator handles operational tasks to ensure network stability and security.

What careers are there in networking?

Careers in networking include roles such as network administrator, network engineer, systems analyst, and cybersecurity specialist. These positions involve managing, designing, and securing computer networks, often requiring knowledge of protocols, hardware, and certifications like Cisco CCNA or CompTIA Network+.

What do you do in a network job?

A network job typically involves designing, implementing, managing, and troubleshooting computer networks to ensure reliable data communication. Professionals in this field configure hardware and software, monitor network performance, and maintain security protocols, often using tools like routers, switches, and network management software. Certifications such as Cisco CCNA or CompTIA Network+ are common for these roles.

Job Title: Network Engineer - Hyperscale Data Center Networking
Location: Redmond, WA
Worksite: Onsite
About WCT
WCT is a global talent solutions partner committed to delivering high-impact technology and engineering talent to some of the world's most innovative companies. As a WCT employee, you'll be part of a dynamic, growth-oriented culture that values collaboration, continuous learning, and excellence in execution.
About the Role
We are looking for a Principal Network Engineer with deep, hands-on expertise in hyperscale data-center networking to lead the design, deployment, and operational integrity of our large-scale network fabric. This role is ideal for a networking expert who has operated at the highest levels of scale and reliability within a major cloud provider's physical networking organization, and who is ready to bring that experience to bear on our infrastructure.
What You'll Do
  • Lead architecture and large-scale deployment of data-center network fabrics, spanning TOR, T1/T2, and core layers
  • Own and evolve DCFX/MGFX designs, out-of-band (OOB) management networks, and optical transport infrastructure
  • Design and operate routing and overlay technologies including BGP, ECMP, and VXLAN at hyperscale
  • Drive high-severity, multi-layer incident response and recovery, serving as a senior technical escalation point during critical outages
  • Partner with cross-functional teams (hardware, software, SRE, capacity planning) to ensure fabric designs meet scale, performance, and reliability targets
  • Develop and refine operational runbooks, automation, and best practices to reduce time-to-resolution for complex network incidents
  • Mentor and uplevel engineering teams on hyperscale networking principles and incident management discipline

What You Bring
  • 15+ years of experience in data-center networking, with significant time spent operating at hyperscale
  • Direct experience within a major cloud provider's physical networking organization (e.g., Microsoft Azure Physical Networking / PHYNET or equivalent)
  • Deep technical expertise across the full data-center network stack: TOR, T1/T2, core, DCFX/MGFX, OOB, and optical
  • Strong command of BGP, ECMP, and VXLAN in large-scale production environments
  • Proven track record leading large-scale fabric deployments from design through rollout
  • Experience leading recovery efforts for high-severity, multi-layer incidents under pressure
  • Excellent cross-team communication skills, with the ability to operate as a technical leader across engineering, operations, and vendor partners

Nice to Have
  • Experience with network automation and infrastructure-as-code tooling
  • Familiarity with optical transport and DWDM systems at scale
  • Prior experience mentoring or leading technical teams

Compensation / Salary Range: The typical pay range for this role is: USD $85,000/Yearly - $100,000/Yearly. Factors that may affect pay within or outside of this range may include but not limited to geography/market, skills, education, experience, and other qualifications of the successful candidate.
Benefits: Medical, dental, Vision, Life, PTO, Holidays, 401(k) benefits and ancillaries may be available for eligible WCT employees and may vary depending on the nature of your employment.
WCT will accept applications and processes offers for these roles until the role is filled.
Equal Employment Opportunity Declaration:
WCT is an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to age, ancestry, color, family or medical care leave, gender identity or expression, genetic information, marital status, medical condition, national origin, physical or mental disability, political affiliation, protected veteran status, race, religion, sex (including pregnancy), sexual orientation, or any other characteristic protected by applicable laws, regulations and ordinances.
