What is a network systems engineer?

Network Systems Engineers are IT professionals who design, implement, manage, and maintain computer networks for organizations. They ensure that data communication networks, such as local area networks (LANs), wide area networks (WANs), and intranets, function efficiently and securely. Their responsibilities often include troubleshooting network issues, upgrading hardware and software, and ensuring network security and reliability. Network Systems Engineers work closely with other IT staff to support business operations and may also be involved in planning for future network growth.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a network systems engineer?

To thrive as a Network Systems Engineer, you need a solid understanding of network protocols, routing and switching, and typically a degree in computer science or a related field. Proficiency in configuring and managing hardware like routers, firewalls, and switches, as well as certifications such as Cisco CCNA/CCNP or CompTIA Network+, are highly valued. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication skills set top professionals apart in this field. These abilities are crucial for ensuring reliable network performance, rapid troubleshooting, and seamless collaboration across IT teams.

How does a network systems engineer typically collaborate with other IT teams during large-scale infrastructure projects?

Network Systems Engineers often work closely with other IT specialists such as system administrators, security analysts, and software developers during large-scale infrastructure projects. Collaboration usually involves designing network architecture, troubleshooting connectivity issues, and ensuring seamless integration between network hardware and software systems. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as these projects may require regular meetings, shared documentation, and coordinated testing phases. This collaborative environment helps ensure that the network infrastructure meets organizational needs for performance, security, and scalability.

What is the difference between Network Systems Engineer vs Network Administrator?

Both roles require similar certifications and often work within the same industry environments. However, Network Systems Engineers focus on designing and building network solutions, while Network Administrators handle daily operations and maintenance. Understanding these differences helps organizations assign the right roles for network development versus management.

How much do network systems engineers make?

Network systems engineers typically earn a median annual salary of around $80,000 to $110,000, depending on experience, certifications, and location. Senior roles or those with specialized skills in network security or cloud infrastructure can earn higher salaries, often exceeding $130,000 annually.

Job description

Network & Systems Engineer
About the role
Vox Media is looking for a Network & Systems Engineer to own the design, operation, and evolution of our enterprise office network, studios, and production facilities. This is a hands-on engineering role on a small, high-trust infrastructure team - you will be the person who owns the network end to end.
You will be a primary technical owner of our enterprise network environment, with particular responsibility for our current Juniper infrastructure with Cato Networks providing SASE/SD-WAN and secure remote access. Because we operate as a lean infrastructure team, we're looking for someone who is comfortable working beyond traditional networking boundaries.
The right person will be equally comfortable troubleshooting a complex routing or switching issue, planning a network migration, supporting server or cloud infrastructure, and partnering with Media & Production Technology, Service Desk, and other technical teams to solve cross-functional problems.
What you'll do
As our Network & Systems Engineer on a lean infrastructure team, you'll own networking end to end while contributing across systems, cloud, and identity infrastructure when needed. Your responsibilities will include:
  • Design, configure, maintain, and troubleshoot Vox Media's enterprise network across offices, data centers, cloud environments, and remote connectivity
  • Serve as the senior technical resource for our Juniper networking environment, including configuration, troubleshooting, upgrades, and lifecycle management
  • Administer our Cato Networks SASE platform, including SD-WAN connectivity, secure remote access, and associated security policy
  • Help define the future direction of Vox Media's network architecture, including evaluating and potentially migrating infrastructure to platforms such as Cisco and Meraki
  • Design and support LAN, WAN, wireless, and internet connectivity across multiple locations
  • Configure and manage VLANs, routing, switching, STP, ACLs, NAT, DHCP, DNS, and related network services, supporting routing protocols such as BGP and OSPF where applicable
  • Troubleshoot complex Layer 2 and Layer 3 issues, including packet-level analysis and root-cause investigation of difficult network and application connectivity problems
  • Monitor network availability, performance, capacity, and reliability, and proactively address emerging issues
  • Plan and execute network hardware upgrades, migrations, maintenance, and office infrastructure projects - including studio, conference room, and event connectivity - while minimizing business disruption
  • Manage ISP, circuit, and network hardware vendor relationships, including escalations, renewals, and capacity planning
  • Support and troubleshoot server, virtualization, cloud, identity, and enterprise infrastructure, assisting with systems administration across environments such as AWS, VMware, and Windows and/or Linux
  • Support enterprise identity and authentication technologies such as SSO and identity providers, and partner with IT operations on endpoint management (Mac and Windows MDM) and SaaS platform administration
  • Help administer monitoring, logging, configuration management, backup, and infrastructure management platforms
  • Participate in an on-call rotation for infrastructure incidents and perform root-cause analysis across networking, systems, and cloud environments
  • Develop repeatable processes and automation - using scripting, APIs, or infrastructure-as-code tools - that reduce manual administration and improve reliability
  • Assist with hands-on service desk support as needed, particularly for onsite requirements, including hardware and software troubleshooting, employee onboarding/offboarding, and resolution of support tickets to maintain operational continuity.
What we're looking for
Must have
  • 6+ years of professional experience in network engineering and infrastructure engineering
  • Strong hands-on production experience with Juniper networking technologies and Junos
  • Relevant networking certifications such as JNCIA/JNCIS/JNCIP, CCNA, or CCNP
  • Hands-on production experience with Cisco and/or Meraki, and the judgment to evaluate platforms on technical merit rather than familiarity
  • Deep understanding of enterprise TCP/IP networking, including designing, configuring, and troubleshooting Layer 2/Layer 3 switching, routing, wireless, and network connectivity
  • Systematic troubleshooting skills, including diagnosing complex network and application connectivity problems using monitoring, logging, packet capture, and performance-analysis tools
  • Experience planning and executing network upgrades or migrations with minimal business disruption
  • AWS networking experience, including VPCs, routing, VPNs, and cloud connectivity
  • Systems administration or broader infrastructure engineering experience alongside networking
  • Ability to independently own technical projects from design through implementation and ongoing operations, with the documentation and communication skills to bring others along
  • Ability to work onsite up to 5 days per week in Lower Manhattan(Financial District) and to be onsite for after-hours escalations and scheduled maintenance windows

Nice to have
  • Experience with SASE/SSE platforms such as Cato Networks, Zscaler, or Palo Alto Prisma Access
  • Experience migrating between networking vendors or architectures
  • Experience with Juniper Mist
  • Enterprise wireless design and troubleshooting experience
  • Experience with firewall and network-security platforms
  • Experience with VMware or other virtualization platforms
  • Infrastructure automation with Python, Ansible, Terraform, or similar
  • Familiarity with identity platforms such as Okta and enterprise SaaS infrastructure
  • Media, broadcast, or production environment experience
