What is a network server?

A network server is a powerful computer or device that manages network resources and provides services to other computers, known as clients, on the same network. Network servers can handle tasks such as storing files, managing printers, hosting websites, or running applications. They are essential for organizations to share data, facilitate communication, and ensure security across a network. Properly configured and maintained servers help businesses operate more efficiently and securely.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a network server administrator?

To thrive as a Network Server Administrator, you need a solid understanding of server operating systems, network protocols, and security principles, typically supported by a degree in information technology or related certifications. Familiarity with tools like Windows Server, Linux, virtualization platforms, and monitoring systems such as Nagios or SolarWinds is essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication help administrators manage incidents and coordinate with IT teams. These skills ensure reliable network uptime, security, and efficient troubleshooting, which are critical for organizational productivity.

What are some common challenges faced by network server administrators, and how can they prepare for them?

Network Server administrators often encounter challenges such as unexpected server outages, security threats, and the need to maintain high uptime. To prepare, it's essential to develop strong troubleshooting skills, stay updated on the latest security practices, and implement reliable backup and monitoring solutions. Regularly participating in training and collaborating closely with IT support and cybersecurity teams can help address these challenges efficiently while minimizing downtime and data loss.

Formed in 2017, the company is a national leader in energy storage deployment, utilizing its proprietary optimization applications daily to dispatch its fleet and support its offtake customers. Backed by BlackRock's Diversified Infrastructure business, Jupiter Power has a strategic portfolio of nearly 2,300 MW / 5,000 MWh in operations or under construction and a pipeline of over 12,000 MW in new projects in development.

We are seeking a Network Engineer to lead the design, deployment, and support of secure, high-availability networks for utility-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). In this role, you will own the architect, document, and implement of operational technology (OT) at datacenters and site networks that enable reliable, grid-compliant operation of large-scale energy storage assets.

As a technical contributor, you will define network standards, lead commissioning activities, troubleshoot complex field issues, and provide technical guidance across engineering and operations teams. This role combines hands-on field involvement with system design, cybersecurity alignment, and cross-functional leadership in high-voltage utility environments.

This position will have a field engineering aspect requiring travel to sites for startup and commissioning. As the experience is gained, the role will switch to more design and engineering.

This role will be based out of our Austin, TX office and is subject to our Company's return-to-office policy which currently requires a minimum of three days a week in the office.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and maintain OT and industrial network architectures for utility-scale BESS sites
  • Lead network planning and deployment for greenfield and brownfield projects, including site LAN/WAN, VLANs, routing, and segmentation
  • Configure and support industrial switches, routers, firewalls, and remote access solutions
  • Ensure reliable and secure communications between SCADA systems, plant controllers, PCS, meters, and protection equipment
  • Lead network commissioning, testing, site acceptance activities for network systems.
  • Diagnose and resolve complex network, latency, and communication issues in live utility environments
  • Develop and maintain network standards, documentation, and diagrams
  • Support and align with OT cybersecurity requirements, utility standards, and regulatory frameworks including support of the NERC CIP program.

Technical Skills/Experience

  • Technology Platform Experience: Palo Alto, HP/Aruba SDWAN, Cisco, Hirshman, MOXA, Artista.
  • Knowledge of industrial Ethernet networks, VLANs, QoS, redundancy, and failover designs
  • Experience configuring firewalls, VPNs, secure remote access, and network segmentation in OT environments
  • Experience supporting SCADA, plant controllers, PLC networks, and PCS communications
  • Understanding of OT cybersecurity principles, defense-in-depth, and secure network design
  • Ability to analyze network traffic, logs, and performance metrics to resolve complex issues
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Windows Server systems, including configuration, patching coordination, and basic administration
  • Familiarity with NERC CIP, IEC standards, or utility cybersecurity frameworks
  • Background in grid interconnection, protection systems, or power systems communications
  • Experience developing network standards for multi-site or fleet-scale deployments

Qualifications

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Cyber Security, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
  • 3+ years of experience designing and supporting industrial or critical-infrastructure networks
  • Experience in network architecture, routing, switching, and segmentation
  • Proven background supporting OT, utility, or industrial control system environments
  • Experience working in high-voltage or utility-scale infrastructure projects or any large scale industrial environments
  • Ability to travel to project sites and support field commissioning activities as required.
  • Strong troubleshooting, communication, and documentation skills
