Network Security Engineer Internship information

What is a network security engineer internship?

A Network Security Engineer Internship is a temporary, entry-level position where students or recent graduates gain hands-on experience in protecting an organization’s computer networks and systems. Interns assist with tasks like monitoring network traffic for security threats, configuring firewalls, responding to incidents, and learning about cybersecurity protocols. These internships typically last a few months and provide valuable real-world exposure to security tools and practices, helping interns prepare for a career in network security. The role often involves working closely with experienced engineers and participating in security assessments and vulnerability testing.

What types of projects or tasks can I expect to work on as a network security engineer intern?

As a Network Security Engineer Intern, you’ll typically assist with monitoring network traffic for unusual activity, performing vulnerability assessments, and helping to implement security measures like firewalls and intrusion detection systems. You may also participate in routine security audits, document incident response procedures, and support the team in researching and evaluating new security tools. Your work will often involve collaborating with IT and security professionals, providing a great opportunity to learn from experienced mentors and gain hands-on experience in real-world scenarios.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a network security engineer intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Network Security Engineer Intern, you need a foundational understanding of networking concepts, cybersecurity principles, and relevant coursework or certifications like CompTIA Security+ or Cisco CCNA. Familiarity with security tools such as firewalls, intrusion detection/prevention systems (IDS/IPS), and network monitoring platforms is typically expected. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you identify threats and collaborate with team members. These skills and qualities ensure you can effectively support the organization's cybersecurity posture and quickly adapt to real-world security challenges.

CAREER OPPORTUNITYPosition Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Network Engineer to join our team. The ideal candidate will possess broad, hands-on experience across routing and switching, firewall, and network security applications. This role is a strong fit for someone with a solid understanding of network architecture design who is comfortable working across a multi-vendor environment and supporting the full lifecycle of a network, from design and deployment through monitoring and troubleshooting.

  • Multi-vendor routing & switching expertise
  • Comprehensive firewall & network security management
  • Full lifecycle support: design, deployment, and optimization
  • On-site position, Birmingham, AL
Responsibilities
  • Design, deploy, and maintain routing and switching solutions across multi-vendor environments
  • Configure, manage, and maintain firewalls and network security policies to protect infrastructure and client data
  • Support voice and SIP/VoIP infrastructure, including session border controllers (SBCs), as part of the broader network
  • Monitor network performance and capacity, and proactively identify and resolve issues
  • Provide expert-level support and troubleshooting for network-related issues
  • Produce and maintain accurate network documentation and diagrams
  • Collaborate with internal teams and clients to resolve technical challenges
  • Stay current with industry best practices and emerging technologies
Qualifications
  • Extensive experience in network routing and switching across a multi-vendor environment
  • Strong experience with firewall management and network security
  • Solid understanding of network architecture design and best practices
  • Solid understanding of VoIP (Voice over IP) infrastructure
  • Proven ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with SIP protocol and VoIP technologies, including SBCs
  • Proficiency with the Linux CLI
  • Knowledge of Asterisk or similar platforms
  • Experience with SD-WAN and network automation
Certifications

Relevant certifications are a strong plus. We value depth across a range of technologies rather than any single vendor, and equivalent hands-on experience will be considered. Examples include, but are not limited to:

  • Routing, Switching and Wireless: Aruba (ACMA, ACMP, ACSP), Juniper (JNCIA, JNCIS, JNCIP), CWNP (CWNA), CompTIA Network+
  • Firewall and Security: Palo Alto Networks (PCNSA, PCNSE), Fortinet (NSE 4 through 7), Check Point (CCSA, CCSE), CompTIA Security+
  • Voice and VoIP: SIP School (SSCA), Asterisk (dCAA/dCAP), SBC vendor certifications (e.g. Ribbon, TelcoBridges)
  • Competitive salary and benefits package
  • On-site position based in Birmingham, AL
  • Collaborative and supportive team environment
  • Chance to make a significant impact on the company’s success

We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity at our company. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status. Please note that as part of our policy to ensure a substance-free workplace, Ambit team members are required to consent to random drug testing. Additionally, a background check and/or drug test must be cleared to enter government facilities.
