Network Installation information

What is network installation?

Network installation is the process of setting up the hardware and software necessary for computers and other devices to communicate and share resources within an organization or home. This typically involves installing network cables, configuring routers and switches, setting up wireless access points, and ensuring devices are connected securely. Professionals performing network installation also test the system to ensure reliable connectivity and may provide ongoing support and maintenance. Proper network installation is essential for efficient and secure data communication.

What are some common challenges faced during network installation projects, and how can they be addressed?

Network installation professionals often encounter challenges such as unexpected site conditions, outdated infrastructure, or coordinating with other trades on-site. These issues can be mitigated by conducting thorough site surveys beforehand, maintaining clear communication with clients and contractors, and staying adaptable with backup plans for equipment or cabling needs. Proactive problem-solving and collaborating closely with IT teams and project managers are key to ensuring installations are completed efficiently and meet technical requirements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a network installation technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Network Installation Technician, you need a solid understanding of networking fundamentals, cabling standards, and troubleshooting, typically supported by a relevant technical diploma or certification. Familiarity with network hardware, cable testers, and systems such as Cisco or CompTIA Network+ certification is often required. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help technicians work efficiently and collaborate with clients or team members. These skills ensure reliable and secure network installations that meet organizational needs and industry standards.

Upside Innovations, a SixAxis company, is a premier manufacturer of aluminum ramps, steps, canopies, covered walkways, and custom access products. Since our inception in 2009, we have experienced tremendous growth, leading to our recent relocation to a new, larger facility in West Chester, Ohio. As we continue to expand across the United States, we are building a best-in-class nationwide installation network to support our customers and growing sales organization.

We are seeking an experienced Director of Installation Network to lead the development, management, and expansion of our nationwide installation partner network. This newly created leadership role will establish the standards, processes, pricing, and partnerships that ensure every installation is completed safely, consistently, and with exceptional quality.

The ideal candidate is equally comfortable building strategic relationships with installation partners, negotiating subcontractor agreements, developing pricing models, creating scalable processes, and conducting field quality inspections. This role will work cross-functionally with Sales, Project Management, Operations, and Executive Leadership to create an installation network that becomes a competitive advantage for the company.

Position Responsibilities
  • Develop, lead, and continuously improve the company's nationwide installation partner network to support continued business growth.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with installation partners while assessing capabilities, capacity, geographic coverage, and overall performance.
  • Establish installation standards for safety, workmanship, quality, scheduling, customer service, and compliance with ADA, IBC, OSHA, and company requirements.
  • Develop and manage an installer certification and scorecard program used to qualify, evaluate, and maintain approved installation partners.
  • Conduct periodic field visits, quality audits, and jobsite inspections while driving corrective actions when necessary.
  • Create feedback systems utilizing customer satisfaction, project management input, warranty performance, and quality audits to continuously improve installer performance.
  • Develop standardized installation pricing by product type, project complexity, and geographic region to streamline the sales quoting process.
  • Build, maintain, and periodically update the company's installation pricing models and rate cards.
  • Analyze labor markets, regional costs, and installer performance to ensure competitive pricing while protecting company profitability.
  • Negotiate subcontractor pricing, service agreements, insurance requirements, warranties, and performance expectations.
  • Partner with Legal to maintain standardized subcontractor agreements and risk management requirements.
  • Design, implement, and maintain installer onboarding, training, and certification programs to ensure consistent installation practices nationwide.
  • Develop installation manuals, training materials, and certification requirements for new installation partners.
  • Identify geographic gaps within the installation network and recruit qualified subcontractors to support strategic growth initiatives.
  • Maintain a pipeline of qualified backup installation partners across key markets.
  • Provide Project Managers with current approved installer lists and assist in installer selection for awarded projects.
  • Partner with Sales to support quoting complex or non-standard installation opportunities.
  • Work closely with Project Management to resolve scheduling, quality, or installer performance issues.
  • Monitor installation performance metrics including quality, warranty claims, callbacks, customer satisfaction, installer utilization, and certification status.
  • Prepare and present installation network performance reports, pricing analysis, and strategic recommendations to senior leadership.
  • Travel nationally (approximately 25–50%) to visit installation partners, conduct audits, recruit new contractors, and support strategic initiatives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in construction management, Engineering, Business, or Operations Management.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience managing subcontractor networks, field operations, construction operations, vendor management, or trade-based project management within a multi-site or national environment.
  • Proven experience negotiating contracts, pricing, and service agreements with subcontractors or vendors.
  • Strong analytical skills with advanced Microsoft Excel experience, including pricing models, spreadsheets, PivotTables, and data analysis; Power Query experience is a plus.
  • Experience developing training, onboarding, or certification programs for contractors or field personnel.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA regulations, ADA accessibility requirements, and applicable building codes, or the ability to quickly develop proficiency.
  • Strong leadership, negotiation, relationship management, and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop scalable systems, processes, and performance metrics.
  • Highly organized with exceptional attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
  • Comfortable working in both office and active construction site environments.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently while collaborating across multiple departments.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite; experience with ERP or project management software is preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license with the ability to meet customer jobsite safety and background requirements.
  • Willingness to travel approximately 25–50% throughout the United States.
  • Experience with aluminum ramps, stairs, canopies, railing systems, modular structures, or accessibility products preferred.
  • Experience developing contractor scorecards, vendor management systems, or installer certification programs preferred.
  • Previous responsibility for budgets, cost centers, or P&L management preferred.
