What does a cleared Network Engineer do?

A cleared Network Engineer is an IT professional responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining computer networks for organizations that require a security clearance, often due to the sensitive or classified nature of their work. These engineers handle tasks such as network configuration, troubleshooting, and security management while ensuring all operations comply with government or military security standards. They often work for defense contractors, government agencies, or companies with federal contracts, and must possess an active security clearance such as Secret or Top Secret.

To thrive as a Network Engineer Cleared, you need strong knowledge of network infrastructure, protocols, and security, typically supported by a degree in information technology or computer science and an active security clearance. Proficiency with Cisco networking equipment, network monitoring tools, and certifications like CCNA or CompTIA Security+ are commonly required. These competencies ensure secure, reliable network operations and compliance with government or defense requirements.

What are some common challenges Network Engineers with security clearances face when working on government or defense projects?

Network Engineers with security clearances often encounter unique challenges, such as navigating strict security protocols and adapting to rapidly evolving compliance requirements. Projects may require working on air-gapped or classified networks, which can limit access to certain tools and resources, making troubleshooting and updates more complex. About You
  • You want to make tomorrow better than today.

  • You believe the biggest vulnerability in any system is time. You live to securely reduce cycle time.
  • You enjoy daily decision making and real product delivery.
  • You help ensure project success and client satisfaction.
  • You enjoy collaborative teams, pairing with team members, and inviting your clients to participate.
  • You like to work alongside, and learn from, lean and agile leaders.
  • You are a creative problem solver who is comfortable with uncertainty.
  • You are a curious and keen learner who thrives on enhancing your (and our) practices and knowledge.
  • You see AI as a force multiplier, not a shortcut - and you're already weaving it into how you think, build, and ship.
As a Senior Platform Engineer at Rise8, you will:
  • Create and implement automated configuration and deployment processes to enhance the performance, accessibility, and ease of management of the platform and its related services.
  • Establish and manage administrator and service accounts, while also maintaining accurate system documentation and effectively resolving technical issues.

  • Collaborate closely with developers to diagnose and troubleshoot problems, ensuring smooth operations.
  • Take on the operational responsibility for the services under your team's ownership.
  • Thrive in an environment that nurtures your personal development and growth.
  • Continuously enhance the product, delivering software that resonates positively with users and meets their needs effectively.
  • Champion AI-augmented ways of working across your engagement(s), leveraging AI tooling to accelerate delivery, reduce cycle time, and drive better outcomes at scale.
Qualifications
  • Must have an active TS/SCI security clearance OR be SCI eligible.
  • Must live within the commutable driving distance into Tampa, Florida several days per week (hybrid work)
  • A background of 6-10 years in cloud/platform operations or related roles across diverse environments.
  • Proficiency in administering cloud environments (AWS, Azure or GCP).
  • Expertise in container orchestration, specifically Kubernetes.
  • Proficient use of Infrastructure as Code (IAC) tools, with a focus on Terraform.
  • Subject Matter Expertise in Linux Operating Systems administration.
  • Skilled in developing automation solutions using scripting languages to streamline recurring tasks.
  • Familiarity with networking concepts and practical experience involving technologies like Load Balancers, DNS, SSL, Firewalls, NAT, and NTP.
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot operating systems and applications effectively.
  • Experience handling large-scale production systems and adeptness in resolving production-related challenges.
  • Excellent communication skills, and a keen interest in collaborative work environments.
  • Enthusiasm for skill growth, a penchant for tackling intriguing tasks, and addressing complex issues.
  • A degree (BA/BS) in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Ability to obtain a security clearance for US Government work.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Proficiency in troubleshooting challenges using the Linux/Unix command line interface.
  • Possession of recognized Professional Certifications such as RHCE, Linux+, MCSA, AWS Solutions Architect, AWS Developer, Security+, CISSP, and CCNA.
