What is a network automation engineer?

A Network Automation Engineer (Remote) is an IT professional who designs, develops, and manages automated solutions for network infrastructure, all while working from a location outside of the traditional office. They use programming and scripting languages to automate repetitive network tasks, manage configurations, and improve network efficiency. Their responsibilities often include creating automation scripts, integrating APIs, monitoring network performance, and troubleshooting issues. This role helps organizations reduce manual errors, increase scalability, and optimize network operations, all while offering the flexibility of remote work.

What are the typical collaboration dynamics for a remote network automation engineer?

As a remote Network Automation Engineer, you will regularly collaborate with network architects, system administrators, and software development teams through digital communication platforms. Daily responsibilities often include coordinating on network configuration changes, troubleshooting issues, and automating workflows using scripting and network management tools. Successful engineers proactively communicate updates, document processes, and participate in virtual meetings to ensure alignment with the broader IT and DevOps teams. This collaborative environment supports knowledge sharing and helps streamline automation initiatives, even while working remotely.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote network automation engineer?

To thrive as a Network Automation Engineer (Remote), you need a solid understanding of networking concepts, programming/scripting (such as Python or Ansible), and typically a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with network automation tools (e.g., Cisco DNA Center, Ansible, Puppet), APIs, and cloud platforms, along with relevant certifications like CCNP or DevNet, is commonly required. Strong problem-solving, self-motivation, and effective communication skills are essential for remote collaboration and project delivery. These skills and qualities enable efficient network management, minimize downtime, and ensure smooth coordination across distributed teams.

Job description

Company Overview:

InvestorCOM is a leading provider of compliance technology for the wealth management industry, helping firms drive compliant growth through retirement and rollover solutions. Our platform enables financial institutions to navigate complex regulatory requirements while improving client outcomes, operational efficiency, and advisor productivity.

As a remote-first organization, we are building a modern, high-performing team focused on delivering secure, scalable solutions that support the evolving needs of wealth and retirement markets.

Job Overview:
InvestorCOM is seeking an IT Operations Principal Engineer to provide technical leadership for the infrastructure, operational platform, and cloud services that power InvestorCOM's products and business operations.

This is a senior, hands-on engineering role responsible for designing, improving, and evolving the operational systems that support InvestorCOM's products, people, and customers. Working closely with Engineering leadership, you'll help establish technical standards, improve operational maturity, strengthen our security posture, and enable reliable, scalable platform operations.

This role leads through technical expertise, mentorship, and influence rather than formal people management.
Success in this role means improving the reliability, scalability, and operational maturity of our cloud infrastructure while enabling engineering teams to move faster through better tooling, automation, and operational excellence.  You'll serve as the organization's senior technical authority for IT operations and infrastructure engineering, partnering closely with Engineering leadership to shape the long-term direction of our operational platform.

What you’ll do

IT Operations & Platform Reliability

  • Design, standardize, and continuously improve operational processes that support reliable and secure platform operations
  • Lead technical resolution of complex infrastructure and operational issues
  • Monitor platform health, availability, and performance, identifying opportunities to improve reliability
  • Develop standards, documentation, and operational runbooks that improve consistency and resiliency

Cloud Infrastructure & Automation

  • Design and evolve Azure-based infrastructure to improve scalability, resiliency, and operational efficiency.
  • Champion infrastructure automation through Infrastructure-as-Code and modern operational practices.
  • Define and continually improve observability across infrastructure through monitoring, logging, alerting, and telemetry.
  • Identify opportunities to simplify operations through automation and AI-assisted tooling

Security Operations & Compliance

  • Partner with Engineering leadership to maintain InvestorCOM's SOC 2 Type 2 operational controls
  • Improve operational security practices including identity management, vulnerability management, logging, monitoring, and secure operational standards
  • Support business continuity and disaster recovery planning and testing
  • Contribute technical expertise during audits, client security reviews, and compliance initiatives

Technical Leadership

  • Establish operational engineering standards and best practices
  • Mentor engineers by sharing operational expertise, establishing standards, and raising the bar for operational excellence
  • Act as the technical escalation point for complex operational issues
  • Drive continuous improvement across infrastructure, tooling, automation, and operational practices
  • Foster a culture of operational excellence by sharing knowledge, establishing best practices, and helping engineers solve complex operational challenges

Operational Improvement

  • Evaluate and introduce technologies, tooling, and automation that improve scalability, operational maturity, and long-term efficiency while reducing technical risk
  • Champion automation-first approaches to repetitive operational work
  • Continuously improve documentation, processes, and operational maturity across the organization
  • Evaluate technology solutions and make recommendations that balance scalability, operational simplicity, cost, and long-term maintainability

What you’ll bring

Required

  • 8+ years of experience in Infrastructure Engineering, Cloud Operations, Site Reliability Engineering, or IT Operations, with demonstrated experience leading complex technical initiatives
  • Strong experience designing and administering Azure cloud environments, including networking, identity, monitoring, and security services.
  • Experience with monitoring, logging, observability, and operational tooling
  • Strong understanding of Windows environments, networking fundamentals, identity management, and security best practices
  • Experience supporting compliance-focused environments such as SOC 2
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent documentation and communication skills

Nice to have

  • Experience with Infrastructure-as-Code (Terraform, Bicep, ARM, or similar)
  • Experience with scripting or automation (PowerShell, Bash, Python, etc.)
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices
  • Experience supporting SaaS platforms
  • Familiarity with Agile or EOS operating environments
  • Experience leveraging AI tools to improve operational efficiency

How you'll work

  • Operate with a high degree of ownership and autonomy in a remote-first environment
  • Collaborate openly across Engineering, Product, and Operations to solve complex technical challenges
  • Lead through technical excellence, mentorship, and influence rather than formal authority
  • Continuously improve reliability, scalability, and operational maturity through practical, hands-on engineering

Why Join InvestorCOM?

  • Shape the operational foundation of a growing SaaS platform serving leading wealth management firms across North America
  • Serve as the technical authority for cloud infrastructure, operational engineering, and platform reliability
  • Introduce modern engineering practices, automation, and cloud technologies that will influence the organization for years to come
  • Join a collaborative, remote-first organization that values ownership, continuous improvement, and engineering excellence
  • Competitive compensation and comprehensive benefits

Compensation & Location

Location: Remote (Ontario)

Salary Range: $125k-$150k

Comprehensive benefits package.

At InvestorCOM, the differences that make each of us who we are, the perspectives that help define how we think and work, and our individually unique experiences help us drive innovation, both in and outside of the company.
