Job description

Venture outside the ordinary - TMX Careers

The TMX group of companies includes leading global exchanges such as the Toronto Stock Exchange, Montreal Exchange, and numerous innovative organizations enhancing capital markets. United as a global team, we're connecting cross-functionally, traversing industries and geographies, moving opportunity into action, advancing global economic growth, and propelling progress. Through a rich exchange of ideas, meaningful collaboration, and a nimble operating model, we're powering some of the nation's most critical systems, fueling capital formation and innovation, bringing increased opportunity to business visionaries, product ingenuity to consumers, and career exploration to our team.

Ready to be part of the action?

Department Overview: Global Enterprise Services (GES) is one of the foundational divisions of the TMX Group, that empowers internal TMX business lines for their technology needs, operations and digital innovation. GES as a client centric organization focuses on building technology capabilities, enabling our clients with the best technology solutions and providing effective technology financial and resource management processes. The cost effective operation is a key attribute of the GES execution. GES is responsible for delivery of all technology initiatives and services across TMX.

Role Summary: As the Principal Automation Engineer, you will serve as the strategic lead for infrastructure automation across TMX Group, driving the transition toward a "Platform Engineering" model. You will define the enterprise roadmap for Infrastructure as Code (IaC), leveraging Ansible and Terraform to build standardized, self-service pipelines across hybrid-cloud environments (on-premise, AWS, and OpenShift).

Beyond technical execution, you will provide architectural governance, establishing automated guardrails for security and compliance while eliminating manual bottlenecks in provisioning. In this evolution of the role, you will also spearhead the integration of Artificial Intelligence into the automation ecosystem.

You will act as a high-level consultant to Global Technology Solutions (GTS), mentoring engineering teams and evangelizing a culture where AI-driven development enhances system reliability and autonomous operations. Your leadership will be pivotal in transforming fragmented infrastructure tasks into scalable, business-agnostic services, significantly improving organizational agility and reducing time-to-market for critical financial systems.

This role reports to: Senior Technical Manager, Platform Engineering, Monitoring and Observability

Job Location: Hybrid (2-3 days in office) - based in Toronto, ON.

Key Accountabilities

Platform Strategy and Core Infrastructure:

  • Define and drive the enterprise strategy for Platform Engineering and IaC using Ansible Automation Platform and Terraform for both bare-metal and virtualized infrastructure (RedHat, OpenShift, VMware).
  • Lead the architecture and implementation of critical datacenter technologies, including network booting (PXE), identity (LDAP/DNS/DHCP), and high-performance storage solutions (NetApp, PURE, Portworx).

Governance and Technical Expertise:

Generative AI Integration and Innovation:

  • Spearhead the integration and adoption of Generative AI tools (e.g., Copilot/Claude) to augment engineering velocity, code development, and autonomous operations.

Technical Leadership and Team Development

  • Act as the subject matter expert (SME) for low-level performance tuning, observability (Splunk/Grafana), and OS lifecycle management (RedHat Satellite).
  • Provide technical oversight and strategic direction to Systems and Automation Engineers, focusing on design reviews, solution consistency, and team-wide technical excellence.
