Job description

This is technical work in the field of land surveying. Work requires knowledge of standardized work routines used in land surveying, which involves the use of common equipment or uncomplicated machinery. Contacts require basic courtesy, tact, and effectiveness in dealing with others, including contacts to request or provide information, ask questions, or obtain clarification.

The work is fairly routine following established routines, standing instructions, and established procedures, but some variation in the sequence is permitted based on situations encountered in the workplace. The work is performed inside and outside where there are some unknown risks and hazards, but they are controllable. Operates surveying equipment, calculators, and a motor vehicle.

The physical demands consist of walking, standing, sitting, and bending, exposure to dust, dirt, water areas such as rivers, streams and other unpleasant conditions and moving and lifting surveying equipment and tools. The work is performed under general supervision where the work assignments are subject to instructions and established work routines, and the worker is given latitude to rearrange the sequence based on changing work situations, or workflow. Examples of Work Measures and marks horizontal and vertical distances.

Clears brush and cuts line for property boundary locations. Takes notes and makes minor sketches. Digs for property irons and marks and drives stakes.

Removes and enters manholes to determine elevation. Holds level, stadia or sight rod at points designated by the Instrument man. Loads, unloads and maintains equipment into survey party vehicle.

Assists in preparing designated site for surveying personnel. Operates surveying equipment and tools. Secures, cleans and cares for survey instruments and tools.

Serves as flagman in heavy traffic. Demonstrates proficiency in the City of Jacksonville's competencies. Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of routines and procedures used in field land surveying. Ability to learn and use surveying tools and equipment. Ability to read, comprehend and apply written and verbal instructions.

Ability to read accurately various measuring devices. Ability to perform basic arithmetic computations. Ability to work under adverse conditions.

Ability to lift and transport surveying materials. Ability to operate a motor vehicle. Open Requirements/Supplemental Information Must have one (1) year of experience in land surveying, related engineering or construction experience.

Physically able to move and lift surveying equipment. LICENSE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION: A valid Class E Driver's License is required prior to appointment and must be maintained. City of Jacksonville Public Driver Certification must qualify for prior to appointment, obtain and maintain during employment.
