How much do neonatal surgery jobs pay per week?

As of Jun 6, 2026, the average weekly pay for neonatal surgery in the United States is $2,465.60, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $1,923.08 and $2,903.85 per week, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Neonatal Surgeon, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Neonatal Surgeon, you need advanced surgical expertise, deep knowledge of neonatal physiology, and a medical degree with specialized training in pediatric and neonatal surgery. Mastery of surgical instruments, familiarity with neonatal intensive care technologies, and board certification in pediatric surgery are typically required. Exceptional attention to detail, composure under pressure, and strong communication skills are critical soft skills in this role. These competencies are essential for ensuring the highest standard of care and successful outcomes for vulnerable newborn patients undergoing complex procedures.

What is the difference between Neonatal Surgery vs Pediatric Surgery?

AspectNeonatal SurgeryPediatric Surgery
Required CredentialsMedical degree, surgical residency, neonatal or pediatric surgical fellowshipMedical degree, surgical residency, pediatric surgical fellowship
Work EnvironmentHospitals with neonatal intensive care units, specialized pediatric centersHospitals, clinics, specialized pediatric hospitals
Industry UsageFocuses on surgical treatment of newborns, congenital anomaliesBroader scope including children up to adolescence, various surgical procedures

Neonatal Surgery specifically addresses surgical issues in newborns, often requiring specialized training in neonatal care. Pediatric Surgery covers a wider age range, including older children, with a broader scope of procedures. While both roles require similar credentials, Neonatal Surgery is more specialized in neonatal conditions, whereas Pediatric Surgery encompasses a larger patient demographic.

What is neonatal surgery?

Neonatal surgery is a specialized branch of pediatric surgery focused on the diagnosis and surgical treatment of newborn infants, particularly those who are less than four weeks old. Surgeons in this field treat a range of congenital and acquired conditions, such as birth defects, abdominal wall defects, and gastrointestinal obstructions. These delicate procedures are often performed in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) and require close collaboration with neonatologists and other specialists to ensure the best outcomes for newborns. Neonatal surgery plays a critical role in saving and improving the lives of infants with life-threatening conditions.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in neonatal surgery, and how can they be addressed?

Neonatal surgeons frequently encounter challenges such as managing complex congenital anomalies in very small and fragile patients, coordinating care with multidisciplinary teams, and responding to emergencies at any hour. Effective communication with neonatologists, anesthesiologists, and nursing staff is essential for optimal outcomes. Staying updated on the latest surgical techniques and maintaining emotional resilience are also crucial, as the cases can be both technically and emotionally demanding. Seeking mentorship, participating in peer support groups, and engaging in continuous medical education can help neonatal surgeons address these challenges successfully.
