Job Summary

Job Summary:

The Division of Neonatology has an immediate opening for a Research Nurse Manager, in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Utah Spencer F. Eccles School of Medicine. The Research Nurse Manager provides operational and clinical leadership for neonatal research activities conducted within the NICU and Developmental Assessment Clinic. This position manages research nursing, regulatory, and data management staff; oversees study startup, conduct, and closeout activities; ensures compliance with institutional and regulatory requirements; and collaborates with investigators, sponsors, and clinical partners to support a robust neonatal research portfolio.

This position is posted at multiple job levels. Each level has distinct qualifications, responsibilities, which will be evaluated during the selection process. Final placement, including the associated pay rate, will be determined based on business needs and budget considerations.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

Direct/Manage/Supervise the organization’s clinical research operations including research coordination, monitoring, interviewing, and patient services. Develop research studies and create standards and guidelines for clinical research services and programs, monitoring adherence to protocols. Ensure clinical research strategies, policies, and procedures are maintained. Ensure adherence to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Good Clinical Practices (GCPs), and all applicable regulations. Prepare reports and keep upper-level management informed of progress and problems.

1. Lead and Manage Neonatal Clinical Research Operations

Oversee daily operations of the Division of Neonatology clinical research program to ensure the successful execution of sponsored and investigator-initiated studies while maintaining regulatory compliance, participant safety, and operational efficiency.

a. Provide direct leadership, supervision, coaching, and performance management for a team of research nurses, regulatory personnel, and data management staff.

b. Conduct regular one-on-one meetings, annual performance evaluations, and professional development planning for research personnel.

c. Monitor team workload, staffing resources, and study assignments to ensure appropriate coverage for active and anticipated research projects.

d. Serve as a clinical and operational resource for research staff and investigators, providing guidance regarding study implementation and protocol requirements.

e. Maintain research coverage by performing clinical research activities as needed within the Newborn Intensive Care Unit ( NICU ) and affiliated clinical programs.

f. Participate in rotational weekend coverage, as required by study protocols or operational needs.

g. Lead and facilitate research-related meetings with investigators, collaborators, sponsors, and divisional leadership to support program objectives and operational effectiveness.

2. Direct Industry-Sponsored Clinical Trial Activities

Provide oversight of all administrative, clinical, and operational activities associated with industry-sponsored clinical trials from study feasibility through closeout.

a. Serve as the primary operational contact for study sponsors, contract research organizations (CROs), and collaborating institutions.

b. Collaborate with investigators, research administration, and finance personnel to evaluate study feasibility, negotiate budgets, and allocate resources.

c. Facilitate study startup activities, including protocol review, operational planning, regulatory submissions, and study-specific training.

d. Ensure study procedures are effectively integrated into routine clinical workflows within the NICU and associated clinical settings.

e. Oversee study conduct to ensure compliance with protocol requirements, sponsor expectations, institutional policies, and regulatory standards.

f. Monitor enrollment, protocol adherence, study timelines, and data quality throughout the study lifecycle.

g. Prepare and distribute study metrics, operational reports, and research updates to investigators and leadership.

h. Coordinate study closeout activities and ensure completion of all required documentation and regulatory obligations.

3. Oversee Investigator-Initiated Research Studies

Provide operational and regulatory leadership for investigator-initiated studies to support the development and successful implementation of innovative neonatal research.

a. Collaborate with principal investigators in protocol development, study design, and operational planning.

b. Assist in the preparation and maintenance of research documents, study manuals, regulatory submissions, and study-specific procedures.

c. Coordinate required institutional and regulatory reviews, including IRB submissions, amendments, and continuing reviews.

d. Provide guidance regarding study implementation, participant recruitment strategies, and protocol execution.

e. Support grant submissions through development of research budgets, operational plans, and study resource projections.

f. Monitor study progress and identify opportunities to improve compliance, efficiency, and participant enrollment.

4. Ensure Regulatory Compliance and Quality Management

Establish and maintain systems that promote regulatory compliance, research integrity, participant safety, and operational excellence across the research portfolio.

a. Develop, implement, and maintain research policies, procedures, and standard operating procedures (SOPs) consistent with institutional and regulatory requirements.

b. Ensure compliance with Good Clinical Practice ( GCP ), Human Research Protection Program ( HRPP ) requirements, FDA regulations, sponsor requirements, and applicable institutional policies.

c. Oversee audit readiness activities and coordinate sponsor, regulatory, and institutional monitoring visits, audits, and inspections.

d. Investigate protocol deviations, compliance concerns, and corrective action plans as necessary.

e. Develop and implement process improvement initiatives to enhance research quality, efficiency, and participant safety.

f. Monitor research quality metrics and recommend operational improvements to support program objectives.

5. Support Strategic Research Program Development

Partner with divisional leadership to advance the growth, sustainability, and strategic direction of the neonatal research program.

a. Collaborate with investigators and leadership to identify research growth opportunities and resource needs.

b. Assist with budget planning, staffing projections, and operational forecasting for the research program.

c. Prepare reports, dashboards, and program metrics to inform decision-making and strategic planning.

d. Support recruitment, onboarding, and retention efforts for research personnel.

e. Maintain current knowledge of evolving clinical research regulations, industry standards, and best practices and ensure dissemination of relevant updates to the research team.

f. Foster collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders to promote successful research partnerships and program development.

The following job levels and associated pay rates will be considered based on job placement. Final placement, including the corresponding pay rate, will be determined by the department in alignment with business needs and budget considerations.

Senior Supervisor, Clinical Research

Coordinates and leads daily team activities. May spend a portion of time performing the work of those they supervise. Assists with management decisions and activities. Working knowledge of team function within the organization.

Requires a bachelor’s (or equivalency) + 4 years or a master’s (or equivalency) + 2 years of directly related work experience.

This is a Senior Supervisor-Level position in the Management track.
