Job description

Intern – Safe Neighborhoods – Department of Neighborhoods Schedule: Up to 25 hours per week

Are you a creative communicator with an interest in public service? Do you enjoy engaging with the community? If so, we're looking for you.

What You'll Do Working under the direction of the Department of Neighborhoods and with guidance from the Community Development Division Director, the incumbent will assist staff with community outreach and engagement, as well as tasks associated with Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED).

Key Responsibilities

  • Interact with the public, City and county staff, City officials, and outside agencies.
  • Research planning-related issues to assist in preparing documents and reports'
  • Assist staff with various day-to-day tasks associated with other planning initiatives.
  • Attend meetings outside typical business hours.
  • Assist with the coordination of public outreach meetings and activities.

What You Bring | Education & Experience

  • Education equivalent to a high school diploma and currently in pursuit of a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Urban Planning, Public Administration, Sociology, Criminology, Criminal Justice, Economics, Community Development, or a related field.
  • Broad knowledge of the principles and procedures of urban planning and community development
  • Ability to work on several projects or initiatives simultaneously

Preferred Certifications

  • Valid Indiana Driver's License (if operating City vehicle)

Technical Skills & Knowledge

  • Microsoft Office and Teams proficiency
  • Ability to manage schedules, spreadsheets, participant tracking, and event documentation
