What is an NDT instructor?
An NDT Instructor is responsible for training and educating individuals in Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) techniques, standards, and procedures. They develop course materials, conduct classroom and hands-on training, and ensure students understand industry regulations and safety protocols. Instructors may specialize in methods such as radiographic, ultrasonic, magnetic particle, or liquid penetrant testing. Their role ensures that trainees gain the necessary skills to evaluate materials and structures without causing damage.
What are the typical daily responsibilities of an NDT instructor?
As an NDT Instructor, your daily responsibilities often include preparing and delivering classroom and hands-on training sessions, developing curriculum materials, and assessing student progress through examinations and practical evaluations. You may also be responsible for maintaining training equipment, updating instructional materials to reflect the latest industry standards, and providing individualized support to students who need extra assistance. Collaboration with industry partners, other instructors, and training coordinators is common to ensure that programs stay current and relevant. This dynamic routine helps prepare students for successful NDT careers by blending theoretical knowledge with practical skills.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the NDT instructor position, and why are they important?
To thrive as an NDT Instructor, you need a solid background in nondestructive testing methods, relevant industry experience, and certification such as ASNT Level II or III. Familiarity with technical tools like ultrasonic, radiographic, magnetic particle, and dye penetrant testing equipment, as well as experience with industry standards and reporting software, is essential. Exceptional communication, patience, and instructional skills are essential for effectively conveying complex technical information to students. These skills are crucial for ensuring that learners are well-prepared to apply NDT techniques safely and accurately in real-world settings.

How You Will Help the Team
The NDT Level III serves as the technical authority for nondestructive testing training activities, providing oversight, instruction, and program development across multiple NDT methods. This role ensures training programs align with applicable codes, standards, and industry best practices while supporting students, instructors, and customers through high quality, compliant training delivery.
What You Will Do
- Serve as the designated ASNT Level III authority for Visual Testing (VT), Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT), Magnetic Particle Testing (MT), Ultrasonic Testing (UT), and Radiographic Testing (RT).
- Interpret, apply, and ensure compliance with applicable codes and standards, including ASNT SNT TC 1A, NAS 410, ASTM, AWS, API, ASME, NAVSEA, and customer specific requirements.
- Develop, review, approve, and maintain training procedures, lesson plans, qualification outlines, and written and practical examinations.
- Ensure consistency across classroom instruction, laboratory exercises, examinations, and industry practices.
- Provide classroom and hands on laboratory instruction as needed to support training demand.
- Evaluate student performance, administer or approve examinations, and support retesting and technical clarification when performance thresholds are not met.
- Develop and revise NDT curricula for initial and advanced training programs, ensuring materials reflect current standards, equipment, and inspection techniques.
- Coordinate the integration of new technologies, inspection techniques, and regulatory requirements into training programs.
- Provide technical guidance and oversight to instructors, including review and approval of lesson delivery for accuracy and consistency.
- Participate in internal audits, corrective actions, and continuous improvement initiatives related to training quality.
- Support technical documentation, training records, certification tracking, customer reviews, external audits, and regulatory inspections.
- Interface with customers, inspectors, and regulatory bodies on technical matters as required.
Your Knowledge & Expertise
- Current ASNT Level III certification in Visual Testing, Liquid Penetrant Testing, Magnetic Particle Testing, Ultrasonic Testing, and Radiographic Testing.
- Comprehensive knowledge of nondestructive testing theory, applications, equipment, and limitations across multiple methods.
- Strong working knowledge of applicable industry codes, standards, and specifications.
- Demonstrated experience in technical instruction, mentoring, or workforce training.
- Ability to clearly communicate complex technical concepts in both classroom and hands on environments.
- Strong technical writing skills related to procedures, lesson plans, and examinations.
Preferred Qualifications
- AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI).
- Experience working in a formal training facility, technical school, or military or Department of Defense training environment.
- Experience supporting NAVSEA, Navy, Department of Defense, or nuclear adjacent programs.
- Experience with training accreditation, certification, or audit based programs.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
- Ability to perform hands on inspections and demonstrations in laboratory and shop environments.
- Ability to support radiography training environments in accordance with radiation safety requirements.
- Willingness to stand for extended periods and work in lab or industrial settings as required.
What Makes Working Here Different
This role goes beyond traditional NDT Level III responsibilities by combining technical authority with instructional leadership and program development. Rather than supporting production or project based inspections, this position shapes how the next generation of nondestructive testing professionals is trained, qualified, and prepared for industry and government environments.
You will have direct influence over curriculum design, instructional quality, and compliance with complex codes and customer requirements, while mentoring instructors and engaging with evolving technologies and standards. The work is mission driven, education focused, and impact oriented, offering the opportunity to apply deep technical expertise in a setting where quality, consistency, and long term workforce readiness matter most.
