Role Overview

The Lead Welding Trainer serves as ASC's subject matter expert and leader for welding training, certification, and workforce development initiatives across all facilities. This role is responsible for developing, implementing, and continuously improving welding training programs that ensure all welders are trained, certified, and consistently performing to ASC and AWS standards.

The ideal candidate is an experienced welding professional with strong leadership, instructional, and coaching abilities. This position plays a critical role in advancing workforce capability, improving product quality, reducing defects and rework, and supporting operational excellence through hands-on training, performance management, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and deliver structured welding training programs for new and existing employees.
  • Conduct weekly hands-on welding training sessions and skill development activities for all welders.
  • Provide targeted coaching, mentoring, and retraining based on performance evaluations and identified skill gaps.
  • Ensure all welders are properly trained and compliant with ASC welding processes, procedures, and work instructions.
  • Maintain compliance with ASC and applicable AWS certification requirements and qualification standards.
  • Partner with Quality Control personnel to identify weld defects, analyze root causes, and implement corrective training plans.
  • Analyze weld defects, repair rates, rework trends, and quality metrics to identify improvement opportunities and training priorities.
  • Maintain a strong presence on the production floor to monitor welding practices, reinforce standards, and support safe work execution.
  • Collaborate with production, safety, engineering, and quality teams across all ASC facilities to ensure consistency in welding practices.
  • Identify and drive continuous improvement initiatives related to welding processes, productivity, quality, and workforce capability.
  • Partners with supervisors, assistant supervisors, and team leads to identify, develop, and prepare future welding talent and leaders.
  • Support implementation of new welding technologies, equipment, automation systems, and workforce development initiatives.
  • Lead the welding portion of new hire onboarding and qualification programs.
  • Maintain accurate training records, certification documentation, skill matrices, and qualification tracking systems.
  • Assist leadership with strategic workforce planning and long-term welding capability development initiatives.

What We're Looking For

  • Proven welding expertise in MIG, TIG, FCAW, and/or other applicable welding processes.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of welding experience in a manufacturing, fabrication, or industrial environment.
  • Demonstrated experience training, coaching, mentoring, or leading welding personnel.
  • Strong knowledge of AWS welding codes, standards, certification requirements, and qualification procedures.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and instructional skills.
  • Strong organizational, planning, and time management capabilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work effectively across departments and facilities.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a focus on continuous improvement.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and training documentation systems.
  • Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) and/or Certified Welding Educator (CWE) preferred.
  • Manufacturing and sheet metal fabrication experience preferred.
