What is an NDI job?

An NDI (Non-Destructive Inspection) job involves examining materials and structures for defects without causing damage. Professionals in this field use techniques like ultrasonic testing, radiography, and magnetic particle testing to assess the integrity of components. NDI is commonly used in industries like aerospace, manufacturing, and construction to ensure safety and compliance with regulations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an NDI (Non-Destructive Inspector), and why are they important?

To thrive as a Non-Destructive Inspector (NDI), you need a solid understanding of inspection techniques, materials science, and quality assurance principles, often supported by certifications such as NAS 410 or ASNT Level II/III. Familiarity with technical tools and systems like ultrasonic, radiographic, magnetic particle, and dye penetrant testing equipment is crucial. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication are important soft skills for accurately assessing materials and collaborating with engineering teams. These skills ensure the integrity and safety of critical components, helping to prevent failures and maintain compliance with industry standards.

If you want to apply advanced non-destructive inspection expertise in support of Coast Guard aviation readiness and ensure aircraft structures and components meet the highest airworthiness standards, we would love to talk.

Why This Role Exists
The work we do has real impact, and the people behind it matter just as much.

D amp;G is seeking a Non-Destructive Inspector (NDI), Evaluator and Tester to provide Level II NDI support services to the United States Coast Guard (USCG) Aviation Logistics Center (ALC) under the Technical Support Services (TSS) contract. ALC provides logistics and depot maintenance support to all USCG aviation assets, including the C-27J Spartan, HC-144 Ocean Sentry, C-130 H/J Hercules, MH-60T Jayhawk, and MH-65D/E Dolphin.

This role directly supports depot-level maintenance, manufacturing quality, and airworthiness efforts by applying certified NDI methods to aircraft structures and components.

What You Will Do

• Evaluate NDI parameters and recommend changes to existing and new processes.
• Recommend procedures and techniques used to locate and identify anomalies in metallic and non-metallic aircraft structures and components.
• Apply NDI and evaluation techniques to assess manufacturing and repair processes across USCG aviation assets.
• Support the USCG airworthiness program by ensuring manufacturing and quality processes result in airworthy components and structures.
• Provide NDI technical expertise in failure analysis, root cause analysis, and mishap investigations.

• Knowledge of aircraft structures, components, assemblies, and metallic and non-metallic materials.
• Knowledge of metallic manufacturing processes.
• Ability to reach technically accurate conclusions and provide defensible recommendations based on findings.
• Ability to meet physical requirements including walking, standing, bending, kneeling, crawling, climbing aircraft structures, and handling objects up to 50 pounds.
Preferred
• Experience supporting depot-level aviation maintenance environments.

• Strong attention to detail and documentation discipline.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills.

Eligibility Requirements
• Ability to pass an annual physical eye examination in accordance with NAS410.
