What are NDFs (Non-Deliverable Forwards)?

NDFs, or Non-Deliverable Forwards, are financial derivative contracts used primarily in the foreign exchange market. They allow parties to hedge or speculate on the movement of currencies that are not freely traded or are subject to restrictions, such as the Chinese yuan or Indian rupee. Instead of physically exchanging the underlying currency, the contract is settled in a widely traded currency like the US dollar based on the difference between the agreed-upon rate and the prevailing market rate at maturity. NDFs are commonly used by multinational companies and financial institutions to manage currency risk in emerging markets.
