Assistant Women's Softball Coach
Job Description
Job Summary
Under the general direction of the Head Softball Coach, the coach will assist with all aspects of the management of a competitive NCAA DII softball program, managed in accordance with NCAA, Great Midwest Athletic Conference (GMAC), and Hillsdale College policies and regulations. Areas of responsibility include: coaching position players, recruitment of student-athletes, student-athlete development, assisting in management of budget, travel, and equipment; assisting with fundraising and community engagement activities; adherence to NCAA/GMAC legislation, and other duties as assigned. Full-time, 12-month position with College benefits package.
Essential Job Functions
  1. Plan and execute softball strategy and skill development routines for athletes.
  2. Instruct athletes in proper techniques for each position as applicable.
  3. Carry out practice and meet related duties as assigned by the Head Coach or the Athletic Director.
  4. Foster a positive and competitive environment.
  5. Provide support to academics as well as athletics.
  6. Assist with management of team travel, inventory & purchase of equipment/apparel, NCAA compliance activities & meetings, & facility upkeep.
  7. Assist with fundraising opportunities and community engagement activities as assigned.
  8. Scout, contact, and develop relationships with prospective student-athletes; communicate Hillsdale College principles, views, and academic rigorous environment to prospective student-athletes.
  9. Successfully recruit highly competitive student-athletes.

Required Qualifications
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Sports Studies or related field required, Master's degree preferred.
  • Previous experience coaching softball and competing as an athlete or coach is required.

  1. Knowledge of NCAA rules & regulations.
  2. Knowledge of technique and softball strategy.
  3. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and to express ideas effectively orally and in writing.

Physical Demands
  1. Average physical strength is required.
  2. Must be able to ambulate, step, climb, stoop, bend, twist, and carry heavy objects over uneven terrain.
  3. Must be able to demonstrate movements in which athletes are being trained.
  4. Must be able to communicate with Hillsdale College colleagues, athletes, prospective athletes, donors, and other constituents orally and in writing.
  5. Must be able to safely lift or otherwise move up to 50 pounds of equipment regularly.
  6. Frequently works in outdoor weather conditions.
