Brown University Athletics and Recreation is seeking an Assistant Coach for Men's Basketball to join its NCAA Division I program. This is an opportunity to contribute to the development of high-achieving student-athletes while gaining meaningful experience across all aspects of a competitive Ivy League basketball program.
Reporting to the Head Coach, the Assistant Coach will play an active role in student-athlete development, practice and game preparation, recruiting, scouting, and the day-to-day operation of the program. The position will work closely with the coaching staff to provide individual and small-group instruction, evaluate and develop student-athletes, prepare for competition, and help identify prospective student-athletes who can thrive at Brown.
The successful candidate will bring a strong knowledge of basketball, an ability to connect with and develop student-athletes, and a collaborative, team-first approach. This position is well suited for a coach looking to continue developing professionally while contributing directly to a highly competitive Division I program.
Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Assist the Head Coach and coaching staff with the planning and execution of practices, individual workouts, skill-development sessions, and game preparation.
Work directly with designated student-athletes or position groups to support individual skill development and overall performance.
Assist with opponent scouting, film breakdown, game analysis, and the development of scouting reports and game plans.
Participate actively in the identification, evaluation, and recruitment of prospective student-athletes in accordance with NCAA, Ivy League, and University requirements.
Provide observations and recommendations related to player development, team strategy, personnel, and in-game adjustments.
Support the coordination of program operations, including scheduling, team travel, equipment, and other logistical responsibilities.
Build positive relationships with student-athletes and support their academic, athletic, and personal development.
Assist with program and departmental initiatives, including fundraising, alumni engagement, and other responsibilities as assigned.
Represent Brown University and Brown Athletics & Recreation with professionalism, integrity, and a commitment to the highest standards of conduct.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree and **one to two years of coaching experience** required. In lieu of a bachelor's degree, a minimum of five years of directly related experience is required.
Coaching experience in intercollegiate athletics, professional athletics, elite amateur basketball, or a comparable competitive environment.
Strong knowledge of basketball fundamentals, techniques, strategies, and player development.
Job Competencies
Ability to effectively teach and demonstrate basketball skills through practices, drills, individual instruction, and small-group development.
Ability to evaluate student-athlete performance and provide constructive, development-focused feedback.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to build productive relationships with student-athletes, coaches, staff, prospective student-athletes, families, and other constituents.
Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, competitive environment.
Ability to work collaboratively as part of a coaching staff and contribute positively to team strategy, player development, and program operations.
Ability to adapt to changing priorities and perform effectively in high-pressure and competitive situations.
Ability and willingness to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and other nontraditional hours as required by the basketball season and recruiting calendar.
Ability and willingness to travel for competition, recruiting, and other program responsibilities.
Ability to maintain compliance with all Brown University, NCAA, and Ivy League rules, policies, and procedures.
All division employees are required to demonstrate exemplary ethical conduct and conformance to NCAA rules and regulations; the duties of the position are to be performed in compliance with all NCAA, Ivy League rules and regulations; and any rules violations on behalf of themselves or any knowledge of violations within the division are to be reported to the compliance office and appropriate parties.
Employees in coaching positions are required to participate in annual NCAA rules education related to recruiting and maintain current AED/CPR and First Aid certification. Certification is available through the Division at no cost.
