What is an NBHWC Coach?

An NBHWC Coach is a National Board Certified Health and Wellness Coach, recognized by the National Board for Health & Wellness Coaching. These coaches are trained professionals who support individuals in making positive lifestyle changes related to health, wellness, and well-being. They use evidence-based approaches and motivational techniques to help clients set and achieve personal goals. An NBHWC Coach has passed a rigorous certification exam and adheres to ethical standards established by the NBHWC.

How does an NBHWC Coach typically collaborate with other healthcare professionals to support client wellbeing?

As an NBHWC Coach, collaboration with other healthcare professionals—such as physicians, nutritionists, and therapists—is common and encouraged. Coaches often work as part of an integrated care team, sharing updates (with client consent) and aligning coaching goals with the client's broader treatment plan. This collaborative approach helps ensure that clients receive holistic support tailored to their medical and lifestyle needs. Regular communication and clear boundaries regarding the scope of practice are essential for effective teamwork in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an NBHWC Coach, and why are they important?

To thrive as an NBHWC Coach, you need a thorough understanding of health and wellness principles, coaching methodologies, and must hold a National Board Certified Health & Wellness Coach (NBC-HWC) credential. Familiarity with coaching platforms, client management systems, and evidence-based behavior change tools is often essential. Exceptional listening skills, empathy, motivational interviewing, and the ability to build rapport are critical soft skills in this role. These competencies help coaches effectively support clients in making sustainable lifestyle changes, ensuring positive outcomes and ethical practice.
