How much do nbeo jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 6, 2026, the average yearly pay for nbeo in the United States is $124,213.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $98,000.00 and $146,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is the NBEO?

The NBEO stands for the National Board of Examiners in Optometry. It is an organization responsible for administering standardized examinations that assess the competence of optometry graduates in the United States. Passing the NBEO exams is a requirement for licensure as an optometrist in most U.S. states. The exams are rigorous and test both theoretical knowledge and clinical skills. Successfully completing the NBEO exams demonstrates that a candidate is prepared to safely and effectively practice optometry.

What are the common challenges faced by optometrists when preparing for the NBEO exam while working full-time?

Balancing a full-time workload with NBEO exam preparation can be challenging for optometrists, as the exam requires a comprehensive understanding of clinical knowledge, diagnostics, and procedures. Time management becomes crucial, and many find it helpful to create a structured study schedule and utilize practice exams. Collaborating with peers, joining study groups, and seeking support from mentors can also ease the preparation process. It's important to allocate regular, focused study sessions to ensure thorough coverage of all tested competencies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Optometrist (who must pass the NBEO exam), and why are they important?

To thrive as an Optometrist, you need a Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree, a strong background in vision science, and successful completion of the National Board of Examiners in Optometry (NBEO) exams. Familiarity with diagnostic instruments, electronic health record systems, and ocular imaging technology is crucial. Excellent interpersonal skills, attention to detail, and patient-centered communication set top performers apart. These competencies ensure accurate diagnoses, effective patient care, and adherence to professional standards in eye health.
