Job description

Become a part of our caring community

The Senior Full Stack Engineer on Team Caliber builds and maintains the NBA platform's business rules engine — the system that determines member eligibility, suppression, frequency, and consent before any action is taken. Team Caliber is built in Java with the Drools rules engine and integrates with the rest of the platform through APIs and a Kafka event backbone. This is a hands‑on backend‑leaning full stack role for an engineer who writes clean, well‑tested Java, reasons carefully about complex conditional logic, and cares about getting correctness right in a system where rules carry compliance weight.

Key Responsibilities
  • Rules engine development — Design, build, and maintain business rules in Java and Drools that govern eligibility, suppression, frequency capping, and consent.
  • Backend services — Build and own the Java/Spring services and REST APIs that expose the rules engine to the rest of the platform.
  • Event integration — Produce and consume Kafka events to connect the rules engine to upstream signals and downstream decisioning and activation.
  • Correctness and testing — Write thorough tests for rule logic and services; treat rule correctness as a first‑class, auditable concern.
  • Performance — Keep rule evaluation fast and predictable as the ruleset and traffic grow.
  • Quality — Run and participate in code reviews, uphold engineering standards, and ship production‑ready code in a PHI‑handling environment.
  • Collaboration — Partner with Product and compliance to turn business and regulatory requirements into clear, maintainable rules.
Use your skills to make an impactRequired Qualifications
  • 5+ years of software engineering experience with strong Java and Spring/Spring Boot skills.
  • Experience building and maintaining backend services and REST APIs in production.
  • Comfort designing and reasoning about complex conditional/business logic.
  • Working knowledge of event‑driven integration and Kafka producer/consumer patterns.
  • Experience operating on cloud infrastructure (Azure or equivalent) with containers/Kubernetes and CI/CD.
  • Strong testing discipline and attention to correctness.
  • Clear communicator across engineering, product, and compliance.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Hands‑on experience with the Drools rules engine or another business rules management system (BRMS).
  • Familiarity with front‑end work (React/TypeScript) to support rule‑authoring or admin interfaces.
  • Experience in healthcare, insurance, or another regulated industry where business rules encode compliance requirements.
  • Familiarity with Helm/Terraform for Kubernetes deployment.
Success Indicators
  • State transitions are precise, deterministic, and resilient to retries
  • Side effects reliably occur exactly once, even during failures or replays
  • Systems recover gracefully from crashes and redeployments
  • AI‑driven tooling decreases defect rates and expedites debugging
  • The state layer is trusted as the definitive source of truth across engineering teams
Why This Role is Critical

In contemporary automated platforms, correctness and reliability hinge on the integrity of state, not just requests. This role ensures that every state transition and side effect is executed once—and only once—providing a solid foundation for trust, reliability, compliance, and scalability throughout the system.
