Summary

Spire Alabama is seeking Construction Crewperson to work in the Birmingham, AL Operation Center.  This position will be responsible for assisting in the repair, installation and maintenance of natural gas underground piping.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Excavation of main or service pipe, trenches or ditches.
  • Backfilling ditches and trenches.
  • Operating air tools and light duty mechanical construction equipment.
  • Mixing and pouring concrete and broom finishing patches in street and making temporary repairs to pavement.
  • Performs maintenance work involved in pipe corrosion protection operations such as applying green line, fiberglass, mastic, etc.
  • Prepares piping for repair and joining. Performs tasks that require the use of respiratory protection equipment as encountered in live gas repairs.
  • Uses locate equipment to locate piping for internal purposes.
  • Ability to lead by example in support of the Company's essential characteristics and values: strong ethics and integrity, dedication to a safe work environment, commitment to a diverse workforce that recognizes and respects every individual's unique skills and perspectives.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Required Education (certifications, licenses)
  • Requires a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Ability to acquire a Class A Commercial Driver's License within 120 days of the start date.
Required knowledge, skill and abilities
  • Must be capable of lifting up to 100 lbs. and carrying large fitting equipment and tools such as jackhammers, tapping machines, large valves, etc.
  • Must operate air tools and light-duty mechanical construction equipment, compressors, gasoline pumps, and excavating equipment for the purpose of installing, repairing or abandoning main or large meter sets as well as other general maintenance on distribution equipment.
  • Read, understand and complete required reports and documentation associated with work conducted with regard to natural gas distribution facilities.
  • Must be able to utilize small tools and equipment required to locate and determine the source of gas leaks as well as the ability to determine the existence of other potentially hazardous conditions, and upon recognition of these conditions, respond appropriately.
  • Must be able to perform assigned duties in confined spaces and potentially hazardous conditions while utilizing proper personal protective equipment such as gloves, goggles, steel toe boots, respirators and other safety related equipment as specified by either Company policy or regulatory requirements.
  • Must be able to operate various sizes of motor vehicles and construction equipment in the performance of the job duties assigned to this position.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
  • Ability to adapt in a fast-moving and changing culture
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the proven ability to build and establish rapport with a diverse array of people.
  • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively in order to meet individual goals and deadlines.

  • This position will require to occasionally work on an on-call basis which will be required to be able to respond to the designated service center within their appropriate district within a maximum time frame of 30 minutes.
Physical demands, environment and schedule
  • Outdoor Work Environment - exposed to all weather conditions, in construction areas with uneven surfaces and in areas exposed to loud audible noises.
  • Work includes extensive time in the field, where duties require exposure to heavy construction equipment, outdoor elements, and physical exertion.
  • Overtime and /or travel may be required.
