What is a native PHP developer?

A Native PHP Developer is a programmer who specializes in building web applications and scripts directly using the core PHP language, without relying on frameworks like Laravel or Symfony. Native PHP development involves writing custom code to handle everything from database queries to user authentication, providing more control and flexibility over the application's functionality. This approach is often chosen for lightweight projects or when a high level of customization is needed. Native PHP Developers need a strong understanding of PHP syntax, security best practices, and web development concepts.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a native PHP developer?

To thrive as a Native PHP Developer, you need a solid understanding of PHP programming, web development fundamentals, and experience with SQL databases, typically backed by a degree in computer science or equivalent experience. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, debugging tools, and knowledge of basic server management are commonly required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help developers excel when collaborating on projects and resolving issues. These skills and qualities ensure efficient, secure, and maintainable code that meets business requirements and user needs.

What are some common challenges faced by native PHP developers when working on legacy codebases?

Native PHP developers often encounter legacy codebases that lack documentation, use outdated coding practices, or have inconsistent structure. This can make debugging and implementing new features challenging. Effective communication with team members and a methodical approach to refactoring are essential in overcoming these obstacles. Familiarity with PHP's evolution and best practices also helps developers modernize code while maintaining stability.

Job description

We're looking for an exceptional product engineer to help unlock the next stage of growth. We have a long list of fascinating ideas to build (plus hopefully many of your own!) and you'll coordinate with teams, work through the tradeoffs, and ship winning improvements as fast as possible. You'll own features from inception through release, with serious resources behind you. This role is in-person in our NYC office, working directly with the VP Engineering and CEO.

About the team

Turtles.com is the AI platform for marketplaces. We are growing extremely rapidly and we're now at a $140M+ revenue pace (not GMV) with 30M+ US shoppers across our platforms. We are well-capitalized and profitable. We've grown 4x+ in the last year and believe we can do it again.

We're a lean team of 65+ across NYC, Helsinki, and Hong Kong, organized around rapid experimentation, autonomous teams, and no bureaucracy. More than 10,000 new shoppers sign up every day, so every 1% lift is a serious win. We only care about building what's on the critical path for our next 4x, and to become one of the largest companies in online shopping.

Turtles isn't for everyone, and that's intentional. If you're energized by solving difficult problems quickly with lots of autonomy, you'll thrive here.

Why this role matters

This is an unusual opportunity. The conventional trade-off is between scale and ownership: established companies provide capital, distribution, and leverage at the cost of autonomy, while startups provide ownership and speed at the cost of resources. This role is a rare combination of both. You'll be sitting directly next to our CEO and VP Engineering every day and have unusual access to core decision making for our scale, with the resources of a company doing nine figures in revenue at your disposal. If you have a good idea in the morning, you can have it live by the end of the day.

What you'll do
  • Take features from idea to production.
  • Run growth experiments on live traffic. New shopping formats, purchase flows, and UX tests, with your work immediately in the hands of hundreds of thousands of people.
  • Work across the full stack: React Native, PHP with Symfony, MySQL.
What we're looking for
  • 5+ years shipping production software with strong engineering fundamentals. Hundreds of millions of dollars and billions of events flow through our system. We have a high bar because we have to.
  • Ships fast without much hand-holding. You should be able to unblock yourself, and when you're on the wrong path you notice quickly.
  • Strong empathy for users and good UX instincts.
  • Responsibly AI-pilled. You take full advantage of modern tools while still understanding what you ship.
  • Exhilarated by results. You care about shipping quality work, especially through the lens of whether it was a high-EV bet.
Nice to have
  • Worked in consumer apps at scale.
  • Ex-founder or experience at an early stage company.
  • Experience in our stack. You'll ramp quickly even if you haven't touched PHP before.

Turtles is an equal-opportunity employer. We hire people from every background and we're committed to building a team that reflects the diversity of the shoppers, brands, and marketplaces we serve.
