Annual Salary Rates
The pay structure below reflects the starting rate for new hires who meet the required experience criteria. Those hired will remain eligible for ongoing annual market adjustments and merit-based increases.
  • $68,000: Noncertified/less than 1 year
  • $73,000: 1 - 3 Years
  • $75,000: 4 - 7 Years
  • $77,000: 8+ Years

Shift Differential
  • 2 PM - 9 PM = 7% added to salary
  • 9 PM - 7 AM = 10% added to salary

  • Step 1: Fully complete the City of Franklin Police Officers - All Experience Levels application. Attach all relevant documents, including any POST certification that you have received.
  • Step 2: Once you have completed the application, you will receive an email with documents (including a Personal History Statement) that need to be filled out and a voucher to ensure your test is free.
  • Step 3: Once you have received a testing voucher, go to the National Testing Network website, register, and complete our written exam by September 23rd! This exam must be scheduled in advance, and there are a limited number of spots per day. Be sure to provide yourself enough time to schedule and complete the exam before the deadline. You may complete a practice exam to help prepare by clicking HERE.
  • Once you have cleared the online NTN exam and document screening, you will receive an email invitation with more details to attend our physical agility test, which will take place on Wednesday, September 30th.

The final day to take the Written examination and submit your documents will be September 23, 2026, at 5:00 PM CT to be considered for the upcoming testing period. Any candidate who has not submitted both the exam and documents by that time will be disqualified.
Interviews:
Interviews will be scheduled after the successful completion of the physical agility test. They will begin on Wednesday, September 30th and,depending on the number of candidates, may also be scheduled on Thursday, October 1st and Friday, October 2nd. Candidates who are from out of state/town will receive scheduling priority.
Physical agility practice date:
Candidates are invited to practice the physical agility test (obstacle course) prior to testing. Candidates interested in attending should report to the main lobby of the police headquarters at 900 Columbia Ave. Franklin, TN 37064 on Tuesday, September 29th at 9:00 AM.
Job Description
I. Purpose of Job
Under limited supervision, patrols assigned zone while exercising responsibility for the enforcement of state and local laws relating to public safety and welfare. Controls traffic, prevents crime or disturbances of the peace, and arrests violators. While working under often stressful, high-risk conditions, applies good independent judgment when dealing with dangerous or unusual situations and implements safe practices and procedures. Reports to the Patrol Sergeant, Patrol Lieutenant, or acting supervisor.
II. Essential Job Duties
A. Performs policing duties
  • Patrols an assigned district in a patrol car, bicycle, or on foot, to observe assigned area for possible criminal activity or other conditions that could endanger public safety; investigates complaints and enforces laws; maintains high visibility.
  • Responds to requests for assistance by, or complaints from, the public via the dispatcher.
  • Identifies, investigates, and reports accidents, dangerous or defective streets, sidewalks, traffic lights, or other hazardous conditions to the appropriate departments or agencies.
  • Investigates crimes, interviews witnesses, complainants, and victims; gathers physical evidence and preserves such evidence for court use; conducts follow up investigations if necessary.
  • Apprehends, arrests, and detains criminal suspects and law violators when necessary; follows proper procedures when making arrests to ensure the safety of arresting officer, the public, and the suspect.
  • Enforces all applicable laws of the State of Tennessee and the City of Franklin; notes suspicious persons and establishments and reports to superior officer.
  • Maintains responsibility for the upkeep of patrol car and any related equipment that is the property of the City of Franklin.
  • Assumes control at traffic accidents to maintain smooth traffic flow, assists traffic accident victims, and investigates causes of accidents.
  • Completes paperwork related to policing duties.

III. Other Job Duties
Performs other job duties as assigned, including:
  • Provides backup and security for Fire Department/EMS personnel when needed, keeping bystanders out of danger, safeguarding property, and rendering first aid in emergencies.

  • Performs special projects as directed.

  • Job Content Knowledge: Has thorough knowledge of the policies, procedure, and activities of the City and law enforcement practices as they pertain to the performance of duties relating to the position of Police Officer. Has thorough knowledge of law enforcement and standard police practices as necessary in the completion of daily responsibilities. Has thorough knowledge of current criminal including laws of arrest, rules of evidence, and courtroom procedures Has thorough knowledge regarding modern criminal investigation techniques, principles and methods and how they relate to law enforcement and police work. Knows how to keep abreast of any changes in policy, methods, computer operations, equipment needs, etc. as they pertain to departmental operations and activities. Is able to effectively communicate and interact with supervisors, and all other groups involved in the activities of the department. Is able to use independent judgment as situations warrant. Has comprehensive knowledge of the terminology, principles, and methods utilized within the department.
  • Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from supervisors and the public.
  • Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. In decision making, some choices are known while others may need to be identified. Some reliance on precedent. Ability to interpret a variety of complex instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Teamwork: Develops constructive and cooperative working relationships with others. Encourages others to express their ideas and opinions. Provides input into identifying and solving problems.
