Job description
MaineHealth Maine Medical Center Portland seeks an innovative and collaborative physician educator to lead its Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program. Working with an Associate Program Director, program manager and committed faculty, the Program Director will strengthen resident recruitment, advance educational excellence and prepare the next generation of obstetrician-gynecologists.
This full-time position includes 50 percent protected program leadership effort and 50 percent clinical practice, together with an academic appointment at Tufts University School of Medicine at a rank commensurate with the successful candidate's qualifications.
The Program Director will provide strategic, educational and administrative leadership for the residency program, with particular emphasis on:
- Recruiting an exceptional and diverse resident class
- Advancing educational quality and innovation
- Developing residents into highly skilled, compassionate and practice-ready obstetrician-gynecologists
- Supporting faculty excellence in teaching, assessment, and mentorship
- Strengthening the program's regional and national reputation
About the Program
The MaineHealth Maine Medical Center OB/GYN Residency is an ACGME-accredited program committed to training exceptional clinicians, compassionate patient advocates, critical thinkers, educators and lifelong learners. The program is supported by a multidisciplinary educational leadership team, full-time faculty and community physicians. The residency has a total complement of 20 residents.
As Maine's tertiary referral center, MaineHealth Maine Medical Center offers residents broad exposure to routine and complex obstetric and gynecologic care across inpatient, ambulatory, surgical and subspecialty settings.

Key Clinical and Teaching Responsibilities:
- Maintain an active clinical practice in obstetrics and gynecology or an OB/GYN subspecialty.
- Provide high-quality, evidence-based and patient-centered care.
- Teach and supervise residents and medical students in clinical settings.
- Model clinical excellence, professionalism, effective communication, teamwork and sound clinical judgment.
- Participate in departmental call, service coverage and other clinical responsibilities consistent with the agreed-upon 0.50 clinical FTE.
- Maintain clinical competence, credentials and continuing professional development.
Required Qualifications:
- MD or DO degree, or equivalent medical degree.
- Successful completion of an ACGME- or AOA-accredited residency in obstetrics and gynecology.
- Current certification by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology or the American Osteopathic Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, or qualifications acceptable to the ACGME Review Committee.
- Eligibility for an unrestricted Maine medical license.
- Eligibility for medical staff privileges at MaineHealth Maine Medical Center.
- At least three years of documented educational or administrative experience, or qualifications acceptable to the ACGME Review Committee.
- Demonstrated ongoing clinical activity in obstetrics and gynecology.
- Experience teaching and supervising residents or fellows.
- Demonstrated commitment to professionalism, educational excellence, and high-quality patient care.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior experience as a residency program director, associate program director, assistant program director, clerkship director or other significant educational leader.
- Formal training or advanced professional development in medical education, leadership, quality improvement or health care administration.
- Experience with competency-based assessment, ACGME Milestones and Clinical Competency Committees.
- Demonstrated success in resident recruitment and selection.
- Experience developing or implementing innovative curricula.
- Record of scholarship in clinical medicine, medical education, research or quality improvement.
- Experience mentoring residents and faculty.
- Academic achievement supporting appointment at the associate professor or professor level.
- Understanding of the health care needs of rural and underserved communities.
- Experience leading change within a complex academic health system.
