National Client Manager information

What is a national client manager?

National Client Managers are professionals responsible for overseeing and nurturing relationships with key clients across a nation or large geographic area. They work to understand client needs, coordinate with internal teams, and ensure client satisfaction to drive business growth. Their role often includes developing strategic plans, negotiating contracts, and identifying opportunities to expand services or products within their client portfolio. National Client Managers act as the primary point of contact for major accounts and play a critical role in retaining and growing business relationships on a national scale.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a national client manager?

To thrive as a National Client Manager, you need strong account management experience, business acumen, and a track record of managing large client portfolios, often backed by a bachelor's degree in business or a related field. Familiarity with CRM platforms, data analysis tools, and reporting systems is typically required. Exceptional relationship-building, negotiation, and communication skills help you stand out in this client-facing role. These abilities ensure successful client retention, revenue growth, and effective collaboration across national accounts.

How does a national client manager typically collaborate with other departments to ensure client satisfaction?

A National Client Manager often acts as a bridge between clients and internal teams, such as sales, marketing, operations, and customer service. They regularly coordinate with these departments to ensure that client needs are clearly communicated and that deliverables meet expectations. This collaboration may involve leading cross-functional meetings, developing client-specific strategies, and resolving issues quickly. Building strong relationships internally is crucial, as it allows the National Client Manager to advocate effectively for their clients and drive long-term satisfaction.

Job description

Interested in working for the industry leader? Interested in having a substantial stake in an employee owned firm? Looking to help your neighbors and impact your local community? RJN Group employees can answer yes to all of those and more. Currently we are seeking a seasoned Client Manager to join the RJN family.
Business Development at an engineering firm is different. It requires building solid relationships and translating technical work into clear, compelling stories about how infrastructure is inspected, designed, and constructed... and why RJN is the right partner. If that kind of challenge feels engaging rather than daunting, keep reading.
Position Summary:
The Client Manager will lead client engagement and business development efforts for RJN's engineering and specialty field services within the wastewater, water, and stormwater markets across Chicagoland and the North Central Midwest (Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, and Wisconsin). This role will work closely with the local Downers Grove office team, technical practice leaders, and the corporate Marketing Department. This is a hybrid position based at our corporate headquarters in Downers Grove, Illinois.
Position Responsibilities:
A sampling of the responsibilities of this position includes:
• Working with regional leadership to develop strategic sales and market development plans.
• Executing business development and marketing initiatives that drive growth, expand market presence, and support corporate objectives.
• Leading client and market development efforts within an assigned territory.
• Identifying, qualifying, developing, and advancing new business opportunities through the full pursuit lifecycle, including CRM pipeline management and supporting pursuits through the close.
• Developing and executing client engagement strategies and pursuit plans for public infrastructure clients.
• Leading and supporting the development and submission of client-specific technical proposals and qualifications packages.
• Collaborating effectively with Project Managers, technical specialists, and the marketing team.
• Traveling and representing RJN at regional and national conferences and trade shows, including submitting abstracts and presenting at industry events.
• Building relationships with prospective clients through phone calls, in-person and virtual meetings, site visits, and at industry functions.
• Actively participating in local professional organizations (e.g., APWA, WEF, AWWA).
• Demonstrating versatility... leading when appropriate, supporting when needed, and serving as a role model and facilitator for RJN's culture and growth objectives.
Essential Skills & Experience:
This role is best suited for someone who thrives in a fast-paced environment, takes ownership of complex responsibilities, and operates with a high level of independence. Our ideal candidate profile includes:
• Bachelor's Degree in engineering or business and a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience.
• Experience in the underground infrastructure (wastewater, water, stormwater) field is preferred.
• Professional Engineer (PE) licensure is a plus, as is consultative selling experience and/or training.
• Demonstrated ability to understand complex concepts and technical material, with intellectual curiosity and a desire to learn and effectively communicate the firm's services, technical capabilities, and proposed engineering solutions.
• Excellent public speaking, written, and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate technical information for a variety of audiences.
• Proficiency with Microsoft 365 and presentation software required. Experience with or familiarity with customer relationship management (CRM) software, GIS/asset management platforms, and social media preferred.
• Strong time management and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple leads and prospects, adapt to changing priorities, and meet client and prospect needs and expectations.
