HX5 is an award-winning provider of engineering, research and development, and technical services to clients such as NASA and the Department of Defense. Founded in 2004, HX5 is a fast-growing veteran and woman-owned company with locations nationwide.
HX5, in support of the GEARS contract at NASA Glenn Research Center, is seeking a Chemical Engineer to support NASA's Electrical Engineering department to augment the Power and Energy Storage Technologies for Mars team. The candidate will be responsible for developing fundamental equations for chemical reactions and energy balance in solid oxide fuel cell stacks to be used by a engineer when developing a stack level MATLAB model of a solid oxide fuel cell for use in a Martian environment.
Required Skills:
  • Background in static and dynamic chemical or solid oxide fuel cell stack design.
  • The ability to develop fundamental equations for chemical reactions and energy balance in solid oxide fuel cell stack designs.
  • Experience with solid oxide fuel cell stacks utilizing O2, H2, CO, CO2, and CH4. Strong technical writing skills.

Other Desired Skills:
  • Familiarity with fuel cell and/or electrolysis hardware at both the stack and system levels preferred.
  • Experience with Solid Oxide based systems are preferred, other electrochemical chemistries are acceptable (e.g. alkaline (KOH or NaOH), Direct Methanol, Molten Carbonate, Phosphoric Acid, or PEM chemistry).

Education and Experience:
Must have one of the following combinations of education and experience:
  • Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering with zero (0) to four (4) years of experience,
  • Master's degree and four (4) to eight (8) years of experience.
  • Bachelor's degree and eight (8) to fourteen (14) years of experience
  • Must have an engineering degree from an ABET accredited program

Other Position Requirements:
  • Must be a US Citizen and successfully complete a U.S. government background investigation.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain the appropriate level of security clearance for the position.
