Job description

Job Title

Automotive Sales Consultant — Napleton Downtown Chicago (Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, Hyundai, Genesis)

Location

Chicago, IL — Motor Row District, South Loop

Employment Type

Full-time

About Us

Napleton Automotive Group is a family-owned dealer group with stores across Chicagoland and Wisconsin, representing Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, Ford, Hyundai, Genesis, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram.

Napleton Downtown Chicago sits on Motor Row on South Michigan Avenue, minutes from the Loop. We're five brands under one roof — Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, Hyundai, and Genesis — which means one customer walks in for a $28,000 Trax and the next one is shopping a Genesis GV80. Same salesperson, same day.

We serve the South Loop, Bronzeville, Chinatown, Pilsen, Hyde Park, the West Loop, the Near North Side, and commuters from every direction off I-55, I-90/94, and Lake Shore Drive. It's one of the densest, most diverse car markets in the country. There's no shortage of people to talk to.

Position Overview

As a Sales Consultant, you help customers find the right vehicle and guide them through the entire process — first hello to handing over the keys. You'll work leads, greet walk-ins, demonstrate vehicles, present numbers, and follow up with people who aren't ready yet.

You don't need to have sold cars before. You need to be someone people trust, someone who follows up when they say they will, and someone who wants to get paid for how hard they work rather than how many hours they sit at a desk.

What makes this store different: five franchises means five times the product to learn, and five times the ways to say yes to a customer. If a Hyundai shopper's payment doesn't work, there's a Chevy that might. If someone's cross-shopping a BMW X5, you have a GV80 to put them in. Salespeople who learn all five lines outsell the ones who don't.

What You'll DoWork with customers
  • Greet and qualify walk-in traffic; find out what someone actually needs before showing them anything
  • Respond to internet leads and phone inquiries quickly — speed matters more than polish
  • Conduct product demonstrations and test drives
  • Present pricing, payment options, and trade-in values clearly and honestly
  • Cross-shop within the house — move a customer between brands and price points instead of losing them
  • Ask for the sale, handle objections, and close
Follow up
  • Maintain consistent contact with unsold prospects — most deals happen on the second or third conversation
  • Stay in touch with past customers for referrals, service, and repeat business
  • Log every interaction in the CRM so nothing falls through the cracks
Know the product

Chevrolet — Silverado 1500 and Heavy Duty, Colorado, Tahoe and Suburban, Traverse, Equinox, Blazer, Trax, Trailblazer, Corvette, and Express vans. Get fluent in the truck details buyers actually ask about: payload and tow ratings, cab and bed configurations, Duramax diesel vs. gas, Z71 and Trail Boss packages, and the trim walk from WT to High Country.

Buick — Envista, Encore GX, Envision, and Enclave. Know how to position Buick against Toyota and Honda crossovers on quiet ride, standard content, and price.

GMC — Sierra 1500 and Heavy Duty, Canyon, Terrain, Acadia, Yukon and Yukon XL, and Hummer EV. Understand where Denali and AT4 justify the walk up from a comparable Chevy.

Hyundai — Elantra, Sonata, Tucson, Santa Fe, Palisade, Kona, Venue, Santa Cruz, and Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 9. Know the warranty story cold — it closes deals on its own.

Genesis — G70, G80, G90, GV60, GV70, GV80, and the electrified models. This is a different selling motion: quieter, slower, more concierge. Learn to sell it that way instead of pushing.

EVs across all five brands — Equinox EV, Blazer EV, Silverado EV, Hummer EV, Ioniq 5, Ioniq 9, and electrified Genesis. In a city where a lot of buyers park on the street or in a shared condo garage, half the job is answering charging questions honestly — range in Chicago winters, home charger installation, public charging near their building, and available incentives. Nobody has given these customers a straight answer yet. Be the one who does.

Also — know the family-hauler ladder from Trax and Venue up through Suburban and Palisade, and be able to place a customer correctly the first time. Understand commercial and fleet programs for local trades, small businesses, and rideshare drivers.

Complete GM, Hyundai, and Genesis manufacturer certification training (we pay for it). Stay current on inventory and available incentives, both new and pre-owned.

Deliver the experience
  • Coordinate with the finance team and management on deal structure
  • Perform thorough vehicle deliveries — set up myChevrolet, myBuick, myGMC and OnStar, Hyundai Bluelink, or Genesis Connected Services; pair the phone, walk the features
  • Follow up post-sale and earn a good survey score honestly
  • Represent the store well in a city where reputation travels fast
What We're Looking ForRequired
  • Strong communication skills and a genuine willingness to talk to strangers
  • Self-motivation — nobody will stand over you and tell you to make calls
  • Reliability and a professional appearance
  • Basic computer and smartphone proficiency
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record
  • Availability to work a retail schedule including Saturdays
  • Ability to pass a background check and pre-employment screening
  • High school diploma or equivalent
Preferred, not required
  • Previous automotive sales experience
  • Any commissioned sales, retail, restaurant, hospitality, or customer service background
  • Bilingual — Spanish, Mandarin, or Cantonese are real advantages in this market
  • Comfort explaining EVs and city charging to a skeptical customer
  • Luxury or high-line retail experience for the Genesis side of the house
  • Truck, trailer, or trades familiarity — it goes a long way with Silverado and Sierra buyers
  • Small business, commercial, or fleet sales experience
  • Military service
  • CRM experience
Who tends to do well here
  • People who are competitive with themselves
  • People who'd rather have an uncapped pay plan than a safe salary
  • People who follow up on day 30 when everyone else quit on day 3
  • People who are coachable and actually apply what they're taught
  • People who learn all five brands instead of hiding in one
Compensation & Benefits
  • Commission and volume bonus pay plan with a training guarantee while you ramp up
  • $50,000–$120,000+ annually; top performers earn more
  • Paid training, including GM, Hyundai, and Genesis manufacturer certification
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Paid time off
  • Employee vehicle purchase and service discounts
  • Five franchises in one building — more product, more customers, more chances to close
  • Real promotion path — many of our managers started on the floor
