Business Manager, Birck Nanotechnology Center
City: West Lafayette
Job Description:
Job Summary
The Business Manager will direct the management of the finances and business office support for the Birck Nanotechnology Center with annual, weighted operating expenditures exceeding $20 million dollars. In this role, you will serve as operations and other related entities in meeting the strategic goals of the University, play a key role in the preparation of financial and management reports to support long-range planning forecasts, budget recommendations, planning, and analysis, and financial analysis and strategic financial management of the department. In addition, you will serve as a mentor and key resource to peers within the business office as well as maintain a unit that provides excellent business management support to the department Executive Leadership, Directors, Managers, staff, and students.
What You'll Be Doing:
  • Directing the management of finances and the delivery of business management for assigned area
  • Assisting department with analyzing financial data to prepare for upcoming projects
  • Working with department leadership and business office in establishing annual rates for services
  • Providing leadership with historical reports, projections and analytical studies that facilitate decision-making processes
  • Creating and preparing routing and specialized reports utilizing systems to gather needed data
  • Providing staff and customers with historical reports, projects and analytical studies that facilitate decision-making processes
  • Maintaining proper fiscal and administrative controls; ensuring that funds are expended in accordance with University and sponsor policy and procedures
  • Establishing and maintaining departmental procedures to effectively and efficiently handle business functions and ensure that sufficient documentation exists to support appropriateness of all business transactions
  • Anticipating potential problems and opportunities and solve problems with little or no precedent
  • Recommending changes in financial and operating policies and procedures
  • Assisting department directors in planning, developing, and preparing each department's annual operating budget
  • Overseeing the preparation of financial reports in support of long-range planning
  • Analyzing financial report data and making recommendations to fiscal and operational leadership
  • Interpreting, administering, and communicating federal, state and University/Unit policies and procedures
  • Analyzing systems, procedures, policies, and resources; taking appropriate leadership action to provide the most effective business support for the Unit
  • Advising department heads and directors regarding University policies and procedures
  • Identifying the unique needs of a self-supporting activity within the context of the University environment
  • Responsible for Business Manager level fiscal approval roles which include but are not limited to: Procurement, Travel, Property Accounting forms, Property Off-campus forms, Role Requests for new hires, new P-cards/limit increases, etc.
  • Serving on a variety of committees to review, recommend, and implement changes to policies and procedures
  • Solving unique business problems without precedent
  • Assisting in training and development of other Business Managers in department and/or organizational unit

What We're Looking For:
  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Management, Finance or related field of study
  • 2 years of business administration, financial management, or related experience
  • Ability to analyze, interpret, implement and communicate University policies and procedures
  • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent planning, problem-solving, analytical, organizational, project management, financial analysis, supervisory, and customer service skills
  • Ability to influence and build work relationships among a diverse workforce at all levels
  • Must be able to foster a participative supervisory style that utilizes accountability, respect and teamwork to successfully guide the work of others
  • Must possess a learning orientation to changing technology impacting business processes, e.g. SAP, etc.
  • Proficient in following software: Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Demonstrate originality, creativity, and ability to resolve complex issues on a daily basis

Nice to Have:
  • 6 credit hours of accounting coursework
  • A demonstrated knowledge of sponsor and University regulations
  • Basic proficiency in all technical and professional skills related to business office and contract grant management.
  • Knowledge of SAP, Cognos and Banner
