What does a nanny do?

A nanny plays a special role in a child’s life. Nannies are childcare professionals who assist parents with the day-to-day work of caring and raising children and are responsible for the children’s well-being and supportive of their emotional needs. As a nanny, your responsibilities may include preparing meals, dressing and bathing the children, arranging playdates, accompanying children to activities, and helping with schoolwork. Nannies typically work during the parent's work hours, but some families have nannies come early in the morning or stay at night until the kids go to bed. You may also be responsible for dropping off and picking up the kids at school and performing light housework.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a nanny, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Nanny, you need strong childcare knowledge, first aid/CPR certification, and often experience or training in early childhood development. Familiarity with child safety systems, age-appropriate activities, and sometimes communication apps for parent updates are important technical tools. Patience, reliability, adaptability, and excellent communication skills help nannies build trust and connect with both children and parents. These abilities are vital for ensuring the child's safety, fostering healthy development, and maintaining positive family relationships.

How do nannies typically coordinate with parents to ensure consistent child care routines?

Nannies often maintain open and regular communication with parents to align on daily routines, discipline approaches, and developmental activities for the children. This can involve daily handover notes, shared digital calendars, or scheduled check-ins to discuss the child's progress and any concerns. By working collaboratively, nannies help provide stability for the children and adapt to any changes in family needs or schedules. This partnership is key to delivering high-quality, personalized care and fostering a positive home environment.

What is the difference between Nanny vs Babysitter?

  • Assist with infant care including feeding, soothing, naps, and tracking developmental milestones
  • Coordinate and supervise extracurricular activities, appointments, and playdates
  • Reinforce manners, etiquette, and social awareness in line with parental guidance
  • Prepare nutritious meals and snacks for the children; assist with mealtime routines and cleanup
  • Keep child-related spaces clean, organized, and well-maintained (laundry, toys, nursery, play areas)
  • Assist with bathing, dressing, and hygiene routines
  • Safely transport children as needed and follow all family security protocols
  • Use discretion and maintain strict confidentiality at all times

  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record
  • Strong communication skills (verbal, text, and email)
  • Highly organized, proactive, and adaptable
  • Comfortable using home security alarms and following household security protocols
  • Genuine warmth, patience, and presence with children of different ages
  • Have a love of dogs, with no allergies to pets
  • Openness to traveling with the family is a plus

Physical Requirements

  • Able to lift, carry, and hold an infant for extended periods (up to 25 lbs), and carry car seats, strollers, and related gear up to 40 lbs
  • Comfortable bending, kneeling, squatting, and sitting on the floor for extended play
  • Able to remain on feet for long stretches and move quickly when supervising young children
