What does a nanny do?

A nanny plays a special role in a child’s life. Nannies are childcare professionals who assist parents with the day-to-day work of caring and raising children and are responsible for the children’s well-being and supportive of their emotional needs. As a nanny, your responsibilities may include preparing meals, dressing and bathing the children, arranging playdates, accompanying children to activities, and helping with schoolwork. Nannies typically work during the parent's work hours, but some families have nannies come early in the morning or stay at night until the kids go to bed. You may also be responsible for dropping off and picking up the kids at school and performing light housework.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a nanny, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Nanny, you need strong childcare knowledge, first aid/CPR certification, and often experience or training in early childhood development. Familiarity with child safety systems, age-appropriate activities, and sometimes communication apps for parent updates are important technical tools. Patience, reliability, adaptability, and excellent communication skills help nannies build trust and connect with both children and parents. These abilities are vital for ensuring the child's safety, fostering healthy development, and maintaining positive family relationships.

How do nannies typically coordinate with parents to ensure consistent child care routines?

Nannies often maintain open and regular communication with parents to align on daily routines, discipline approaches, and developmental activities for the children. This can involve daily handover notes, shared digital calendars, or scheduled check-ins to discuss the child's progress and any concerns. By working collaboratively, nannies help provide stability for the children and adapt to any changes in family needs or schedules. This partnership is key to delivering high-quality, personalized care and fostering a positive home environment.

Job description

Overview

Full-Time Nanny | Palo Alto, California$45-$50 per hour + benefitsLocal candidates only! This is a wonderful opportunity for an experienced, warm-hearted Nanny to join a loving family as their second Nanny, supporting three young children between the ages of 6 months and 4 years old. This family works as a true co-Nanny team, with two Nannies collaborating fluidly and supporting one another rather than operating in a lead and support structure. Chemistry and teamwork matter deeply here, and the right person will feel like a natural fit within a warm, kind household.

Above all, this family is looking for someone who genuinely loves being around children, not someone viewing the role as a stepping stone toward house management. A smart, thoughtful, and emotionally attuned presence matters greatly. The ideal candidate is low ego, collaborative, and open to feedback, with a growth mindset for both themselves and the children. Multilingual ability is strongly preferred, ideally Spanish and/or Portuguese, and experience supporting children with ADHD is a wonderful plus.

Schedule

  • Monday through Friday, with varying hours each day
    • Start time between 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM
    • End time between 5:30 PM and 7:30 PM
  • Ideally, someone who has the flexibility to work approximately 3-4 hours every other Sunday morning would be appreciated, though not required
  • Total of approximately 40 hours per week
  • Schedule may shift over time as children's activities evolve, with changes planned well in advance

Responsibilities

  • Provide warm, attentive care for three young children alongside a second nanny, functioning as a true team
  • Pick up children from school daily
  • Support afternoons that vary between at-home playtime, external activities, and outings with one or two children at a time
  • Encourage independence and active exploration
  • Be physically engaged and active with the children (soccer, swimming, biking, and similar activities)
  • Help transition smoothly as the family shifts nanny focus, with one nanny primarily supporting the baby and the new hire focused on the two older children
  • Set calm, consistent boundaries with warmth
  • Travel with the family occasionally (estimated at up to 4 weeks per year)

Qualifications

  • Warm, calming presence; a natural at helping the whole household feel more at ease
  • A minimum of 3+ years of experience working as a Nanny with very young children, ideally across multiple ages at once
  • Low ego, collaborative, and non-defensive, with a growth mindset for both themselves and the children
  • Strong communicator, intelligent, and proactive
  • Comfortable being physically active throughout the day
  • Multilingual ability strongly preferred, ideally Spanish and/or Portuguese
  • Experience supporting children with ADHD is a strong plus
  • Formal education background is a nice-to-have, not a requirement; genuine warmth, thoughtfulness, and a love of childcare matter most
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States
  • Within a commutable distance to Palo Alto area; no out of area candidates will be considered
  • Must be willing to undergo an in-depth background check and provide strong employment references
