What does a plumber do?

A plumber installs, repairs, and maintains pipes, fixtures, and other plumbing systems used for water distribution and wastewater disposal in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings. Their work includes fixing leaks, unclogging drains, installing appliances like water heaters, and ensuring plumbing systems comply with local codes. Plumbers also inspect systems for safety and efficiency, and may provide emergency services for urgent issues. Hiring a qualified plumber helps prevent costly water damage and ensures your plumbing system operates properly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a plumber, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Plumber, you need strong mechanical aptitude, troubleshooting skills, and a foundational understanding of plumbing systems, typically supported by a relevant apprenticeship or trade certification. Familiarity with tools such as pipe cutters, threading machines, and diagnostic equipment, as well as adherence to local plumbing codes, is essential. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are valuable soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure safe, code-compliant installations and repairs while fostering customer trust and satisfaction.

What are some common challenges plumbers face when working on residential service calls?

Plumbers often encounter unexpected issues during residential service calls, such as outdated or non-standard plumbing systems, limited access to pipes, or hidden leaks. These challenges require adaptability and problem-solving skills to diagnose and resolve issues efficiently while minimizing disruption to the homeowner. Effective communication with clients is also crucial, as explaining the scope of work and potential complications helps build trust and ensures customer satisfaction.

My Plumber PLUS - Manassas, VA

Extraordinarily talented people have built My Plumber PLUS into the largest and most respected residential plumbing, electrical, heating, and air conditioning company in Northern Virginia and Maryland-which means steady demand, full schedules, and real opportunity.

For more than 32 years, we've earned our reputation by doing things the right way: quality workmanship, honest service, and taking care of our team. With 150+ employees and consistent recognition as a Best Contractor to Work For, Top 10 Mechanical Contractor, and Top 100 Mechanical Contractor, our growth isn't slowing down-it's accelerating.

That growth has opened the door for a Duct Cleaning Technician to join our team in Manassas, VA. This is a chance to step into a role with consistent work, paid training, modern equipment, and clear paths to grow within a company that stays busy year-round. • Inspect duct systems for dust, debris, and airflow issues
  • Explain findings to homeowners clearly and professionally
  • Educate customers on indoor air quality and system cleanliness
  • Recommend additional services when appropriate (dryer vent cleaning, IAQ solutions, UV lights, etc.)
  • Maintain a clean and professional work environment inside customers' homes
  • Accurately complete job documentation and close out work orders
  • Follow all safety procedures and company standards
What We're Looking For
  • Duct cleaning, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, or home services experience preferred, but not required
  • Willingness to learn - paid training provided
  • Strong customer service and communication skills
  • Comfortable working in attics, crawl spaces, and tight spaces
  • Ability to lift equipment and perform physical, hands-on work
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record
  • Ability to pass a background check and drug screening
  • Familiarity with National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) standards and best practices preferred; willingness to learn and train to industry standards required
What is in it for you
  • $18-$20 per hour base pay, plus performance-based bonuses for additional earning potential
  • Steady, year-round work (no seasonal slowdowns)
  • Paid training and ongoing development
  • Company vehicle, tools, and professional equipment provided
  • Opportunity to advance into HVAC Install or HVAC Service roles, with company-provided training and development
  • Supportive team environment with clear expectations
$18 - $20 an hour
Compensation includes hourly pay plus performance-based bonuses.
