What jobs in the US pay 300,000 a year?
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Mutagenesis Scientist, and why are they important?
What biology jobs pay over $100k?
What is the difference between Mutagenesis vs Genetic Engineer?
| Aspect | Mutagenesis | Genetic Engineer |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | Laboratory skills, knowledge of molecular biology, often a bachelor's or master's degree | Advanced degrees (Master's or PhD), expertise in genetic modification techniques |
| Work Environment | Research labs, biotech companies, pharmaceutical labs | Research institutions, biotech firms, pharmaceutical companies |
| Industry Usage | Used for creating genetic variations, studying mutations | Designing and implementing genetic modifications in organisms |
| Common Search/Comparison | Mutagenesis vs Genetic Engineer |
Mutagenesis involves inducing mutations to study gene functions or create genetic diversity, often using chemical or physical agents. Genetic engineers design and implement specific genetic modifications using advanced techniques like CRISPR. While mutagenesis is more about random mutation induction, genetic engineering focuses on precise gene editing. Both roles are essential in biotechnology and share overlapping skills, but differ in complexity and purpose.
What are some typical challenges faced by scientists working in mutagenesis, and how can they be addressed?

The ideal candidate has a strong foundation in structural biology and protein engineering, with practical laboratory experience in recombinant protein expression, purification, and characterization.
Minimum Requirements:
- Education: PhD in Structural Biochemistry with experience in protein engineering, purification of challenging targets, design and mutagenesis
- The appointee must have greater than 5 years of postdoctoral training.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Ability to produce tagged and isotopically labelled proteins
- Proficiency in ion exchange chromatography, size exclusion chromatography (SEC), and HPLC
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
Other Requirements:
- Hands-on experience with one or more structural biology techniques: NMR spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography, mass spectrometry
- Experience conducting protein-protein interaction studies and biochemical/biophysical characterization
This position is (insert options below).
- Onsite. The work is performed on-site or at a designated assignment location.
Be Bold.
- Design and execute experiments to investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying immunodeficiency diseases and purine metabolism, specifically adenosine deaminase 2.
- Analyze and interpret experimental data.
- Prepare manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
- Present research findings at scientific conferences.
