Thriving in a Musical Pit Orchestra requires excellent instrumental proficiency, strong sight-reading skills, and the ability to follow a conductor’s direction precisely. Experience with sheet music software, metronomes, and sometimes using in-ear monitors or click tracks are common technical requirements. Teamwork, flexibility, and clear communication help musicians collaborate effectively in the fast-paced, often confined pit environment. Mastering these skills ensures seamless musical performances that support live theater productions and contribute to a successful show.
Performing as part of a musical pit orchestra involves playing live music to accompany stage actors, often in a below-stage or offstage area with limited space and visibility. Musicians must pay close attention to the conductor’s cues, adapt to last-minute changes, and collaborate closely with other orchestra members and production staff. Performances usually occur in the evenings or weekends, and there are multiple rehearsals leading up to and throughout the run of a show. This role is uniquely rewarding for musicians who enjoy live performance, teamwork, and contributing to the magic of theater.

The La Porte Community School Corporation is looking for a band director for the 2026-2027 school year. Our program has 150+ band students who meet on a block 8 schedule with 75 minute class periods. There is a strong middle school program, and strong community and parent support for the arts.

Before an individual (permanent or substitute) can work with students or have his/her name submitted for approval to the Board of School Trustees, the candidate must complete the background check authorization (at a cost of $15.00--cash or check) and the background check must receive a "cleared" rating. Additionally, the individual must complete a federal I-9 form (providing appropriate identification documents); tax forms; a direct-deposit form (with an attached voided check); and, view training videos at the Educational Services Center (approximately one hour in length).
