Job description

Job Type: Part-Time / Contract Position
Work Schedule: Services will be performed according to the Catholic worship schedule, including weekly rehearsals, weekend Masses, holy days, holidays, and special religious services. The schedule may vary based on chapel requirements and the direction of the Catholic Priest or Lead Chaplain.
Place of Performance
Services will primarily be performed at the Luke Air Force Base Chapel, 13968 W. Shooting Star Street, Luke AFB, Arizona 85309.
Period of Performance
One 12-month base period, with up to four additional one-year option periods, subject to contract award and Government exercise of the options.
Summary
The Catholic Music Director will provide professional music support for the Catholic worship program at Luke Air Force Base, including weekly Masses, rehearsals, holy days, and special religious services.
The Music Director will plan and prepare appropriate Catholic liturgical music, lead the congregation and volunteer musicians, coordinate rehearsals, and perform vocally and instrumentally during scheduled services.
The position requires dependable weekly availability, strong musical ability, knowledge of Catholic worship practices, and the ability to work effectively with the Catholic Priest, chapel staff, volunteers, and military community. The Performance Work Statement estimates approximately 150 events per year.
Requirements
  • Must have a minimum of two years of college education in music or a related field, or equivalent years of relevant church or chapel music experience.
  • Must have experience providing music for Catholic worship services.
  • Must be able to sing and vocally lead the congregation.
  • Must be able to play an appropriate musical instrument, such as piano, keyboard, organ, or guitar.
  • Must be able to sight-read music.
  • Must be able to arrange, improvise, play, and score music when required.
  • Must be able to organize and lead a Catholic praise team, choir, or volunteer music group.
  • Must understand Catholic liturgical seasons, traditions, and appropriate worship music.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with the Catholic Priest, chapel staff, volunteers, and congregation members.
  • Must be fluent in spoken and written English.
  • Must be reliable, punctual, professional, and available for rehearsals, weekend services, holy days, holidays, and special events.
  • Must arrive at least 15 minutes before every rehearsal, worship service, and special service.
  • Must successfully complete all required background checks and installation-access requirements.
  • Must be able to work around minors in accordance with applicable Department of Defense background-screening requirements.

Duties
  • Plan and provide music for weekly Catholic Masses, rehearsals, holy days, and special religious services.
  • Coordinate music selections with the Catholic Priest or Lead Chaplain.
  • Lead the congregation, choir members, singers, and volunteer musicians during worship services.
  • Perform vocally and instrumentally during scheduled Catholic services.
  • Conduct a minimum of one rehearsal per week, generally lasting between one and two hours.
  • Select music appropriate for Catholic liturgical seasons, celebrations, and religious observances.
  • Prepare sheet music, song arrangements, lyrics, and audiovisual presentation slides when required.
  • Recruit, organize, train, and coordinate volunteer singers and musicians.
  • Communicate schedules, music selections, and rehearsal requirements to volunteers.
  • Attend chapel meetings and music-program planning sessions when required.
  • Assist with annual music calendars, program planning, volunteer training, and budget recommendations.
  • Submit requests for music, supplies, equipment repairs, or replacement items through the appropriate chapel representative.
  • Maintain and safeguard Government-owned musical instruments, sound equipment, keys, and other chapel property.
  • Ensure copyrighted music and materials are properly handled and protected.
  • Open, prepare, clean, reset, and secure chapel facilities used for rehearsals and worship services.
  • Report damaged instruments, malfunctioning equipment, or facility concerns to chapel staff.
  • Coordinate qualified replacement coverage for approved absences.
  • Ensure any replacement musician meets the required qualifications and receives Government approval before performing.
  • Maintain professional conduct and comply with all chapel, installation, safety, security, and access requirements.
