What is a music video model?

A Music Video Model is a performer who appears in music videos to enhance the visual storytelling and aesthetic appeal. They may play a central role in the video's narrative or serve as background talent, dancing, posing, or interacting with the artist. Models are chosen based on the video's theme, concept, and the artist's vision. This role requires confidence, on-camera presence, and the ability to take direction well.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a music video model?

Succeeding as a Music Video Model requires a strong stage presence, physical fitness, and the ability to follow creative direction, often supported by experience in modeling, dance, or performance arts. While no formal certifications are required, familiarity with on-set protocols and video production processes is beneficial. Professionalism, adaptability, punctuality, and strong interpersonal communication distinguish standout models in this industry. These skills ensure that the model effectively translates artistic vision for the camera while collaborating smoothly with directors, crews, and other performers in a fast-paced environment.

Pay can vary widely, with some models earning more for high-profile or commercial projects. Many models also supplement income through portfolio work and networking within the industry.

What can I expect from a typical day on set as a music video model?

A typical day on set for a music video model involves arriving early for styling, attending briefings about the video’s concept, and rehearsing choreography or scene blocking. You’ll spend much of your time performing specific movements or actions repeatedly for different camera angles while working closely with directors, choreographers, and other cast members. The environment is fast-paced and can require long hours, so being able to take direction well and remain enthusiastic throughout the shoot is important. Collaboration and a positive attitude help ensure the production runs smoothly, and punctuality is highly valued. When not filming, you may use downtime to network with industry professionals or prepare for your next scenes.
