What is a music therapy internship?

A Music Therapy Internship is a supervised, hands-on training experience for students completing their music therapy degree. Interns work in clinical settings, such as hospitals, schools, or rehabilitation centers, applying music-based interventions to support clients' physical, emotional, and cognitive well-being. These internships are required for certification and provide practical experience under a board-certified music therapist.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a music therapy internship?

To thrive in a Music Therapy Internship, you should have a solid foundation in music theory, proficiency in one or more instruments or voice, and be enrolled in or recently graduated from an accredited music therapy program. Familiarity with assessment tools, intervention planning, and often a student membership with organizations like the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) are typical requirements. Strong interpersonal skills, emotional intelligence, and adaptability enable interns to connect with clients and collaborate effectively with diverse healthcare teams. These skills and qualifications are crucial for delivering meaningful therapeutic interventions under supervision and building a successful foundation for a future career in music therapy.

What kind of supervision and mentorship can I expect during a music therapy internship?

During a Music Therapy Internship, you can expect to work closely under the supervision of a board-certified music therapist who will provide regular guidance, feedback, and structured learning experiences. Interns typically receive mentorship through weekly supervision meetings, observation opportunities, and collaborative client planning sessions. As part of a multidisciplinary team, you'll learn how to design and adapt therapeutic interventions, gain hands-on experience with varied client populations, and develop critical professional skills. This supportive environment helps bridge the gap between academic training and professional practice, ensuring you are well-prepared for future certification and employment.
